New climate campaign aimed at U.S. consumers

Posted at 3:30 PM on 05 Jun 2008

A European campaign to raise consumer awareness of climate change has made its U.S. debut. The Together campaign -- not to be confused with the similarly named-and-agendaed "we" campaign -- was initiated by the nonprofit Climate Group and kicked off in the U.S. by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. Various nonprofits, companies, and politicians are involved; Together, they'll seek to guide consumers to greener products and practices (aggregating the CO2 and dollars saved in an aptly named "Togetherizer"). "I extend my best wishes for every success in saying 'Hasta la Vista' to climate change," said ... oh, we'll just let you guess.

When I first saw the together story in Grist, I was almost ready to be happy. Its was so full of hope and promise.
Anything that can be done, must be done. And Done Now! It's that urgent.

Unfortunately, I went a little further, a little deeper.

It starts with Mayor Bloomberg and Gov Schwarznegger - odd political bedfellows - but beggars can't be choosers. It goes on to include such luminaries as the cities of New York, Chicago, Miami and Seattle - no less odd.  It seems so hopeful. But it's not. Despite their illustrious names, leading edge-cover page technology - its just another Commercial front in a Global War and sadly, it declines rapidly from there.
Other Corporate interests include Chase, the News Corp, Dell, Target and Time Warner. Need I go on? The movement/site/springboard has roped in a gaggle of smaller, well meaning (or not) companies.

But We Must Do Something, Anything and Do It Now. HELP IS HELP.

NOT WITH THESE FOLKS.
I can stand aside and watch but not get behind them or their ilk.

By the way, has anybody noticed that despite its huge War Chest, the WE campaign barely slivers in any air time especially in Prime Time.

Bill this is exactly what is wrong with Greens...

"NOT WITH THESE FOLKS.
I can stand aside and watch but not get behind them or their ilk."

People start saying they want to make their products more environmentally friendly. That they want to seek out better ways of stewardship. And what do you say? "f#$# off. We aren't interested in your help. It's just a smoke screen."

Well hombre, the Green movement doesn't have the political muscle to twist their arms to accomplish your goals. And I'll let you in on a little secret. It never will. You need the power of persuasion and you need to get major corporations, Big Oil (and small oil too)..... corporate America, on board. You fail to do that, and you can kiss any progress good-bye.

You want perfection now. When has that ever happened with any movement? So instead of supporting these guys and then simply pointing out when they come up short (but also lauding when they are doing something positive) you would prefer to just say "these guys aren't serious and never will be." An utterly counter-productive position.

Only A Small Improvement

"[T]hey'll seek to guide consumers to greener products ..."

Sorry, but changing products will do very little, and sometimes does more harm than good, such as when consuming a new product causes more harm than continuing to use a more environmentally destructive one.  What's needed is someone with the courage to tell people that we need to greatly reduce both our consumption and our population.  Anything less is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, perhaps literally.
