National parks will get spruced up

The National Park Centennial Initiative has announced its first round of funding for various projects and programs in -- surprise! -- national parks. Seventy-six parks in 38 states will see a total $51 million in federal and privately donated funding. The projects will run the gamut of everything from hiking-shelter improvements to wildlife protection to forest restoration to education. The park-system centennial isn't until 2016, but hey, nothing wrong with getting a head start. In fact, Grist's centennial is coming up in 2099. Donate now!

It would be kind of cool if, for a donation of a certain size, you could have a brief inscription engraved in water-proof dye on a bison, or a bear, or a moose. Like, "Happy Mother's Day Mom, Love, Chuck."

For smaller amounts, you could do a turkey, or a trout.

Meanwhile, if Grist was indeed founded in 1999, then your tenth is approaching. Be careful, if you are planning to include animals in the celebration; the New York Bird Club has gone nuts because some white doves were released during the Pope's Mass in Yankee Stadium last Sunday.

Chickens deserve our true friendship! So do fish! So do other sentient beings! Let us learn to be kind.

Good start....

...but $51 million for 71 parks = less than a million per park.

We need much more than that in order to compete with national parks in other developed countries.
