Nalgene, Wal-Mart back away from BPA

Bottle manufacturer Nalgene will stop using plastic containing bisphenol A in response to concerns from the National Toxicology Program and the Canadian health department that the chemical probably shouldn't be sucked on by kids. Nalgene says it still believes its clear, hard plastic bottles "are safe for their intended use" but says it's responding to customers who "indicated they preferred BPA-free alternatives." Wal-Mart also announced it would pull all baby bottles made with BPA from its shelves by early next year.

BPA - Plastic Type

Hopefully someone in-the-know can help me out on this one. Are Nalgenes made of HDPE still safe? Thanks.

HDPE

Hey,

HDPE is a softer plastic that can leach as well, but is not made with BPA chemicals. It's better if you can go with a Sigg or a Klean Kanteen though.

I suspect what Walmart really means to say is: "We'll stop selling poison once you've bought it all."

What Walmart, in TYPICAL Walmart fashion, is really saying here is "look, we've already bought a bunch of this stuff and we won't buy anymore but we're going to sell our backstock and the personal consequences of our faceless lower income shoppers be damned." What they want you to hear is "Hey everyone - look at us - we're green too!!" Well kids of today, sucks to be you but there's hope for your younger sibs. Suck it up.
