Ford lays out how it will reduce fleet emissions

Ford Motor Co. has laid out specific plans for reducing the greenhouse-gas emissions of its vehicle fleet at least 30 percent by 2020. The announcement comes in response to shareholder resolutions filed by members of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (representing about 300 religious investors) and the Investor Network on Climate Risk, organized by green-minded investment group Ceres. Says Mindy Lubber of Ceres, "Ford is taking a critical first step to align its products with the climate change challenge before us. But, let's not fool ourselves, this step is only a beginning."

By Selling Less Vehicles?

Given their recent lack of success in the marketplace, likely they will meet this by selling 30% less vehicles. At the rate they are going, they may even reduce their emissions by 100%:)

Assuming that this is not their strategy, wonder why they are not supporting Californian in the battle with the EPA instead of fighting mandated improvements in fuel economy. Likely the answer is that they would rather spend on PR than making real reductions now.

My immediate thought, also, was: Well of course there will be a 30% reduction in Ford GHG production by 2020 due to the unavoidable reality of rising energy prices, declining auto sales in general, and a particular growing distaste for big, gas-guzzling vehicles in particular.

In fact, Ford may count itself lucky if its vehicle fleet can produce even 70% of the GHG's it produces today. The world is changing, and dirt-cheap energy is going the way of the dinosaur ... whether Ford is ready for those changes or not.

Mixed feelings

I have mixed feelings about Ford. I drive their fantastic Hybrid Escape. It gets 35 mpg in the heart of the city and the engine doesnt even run 1/3 of the time. And on sooty emissions its supposed to be the cleanest ICE car made by an American company. And the emission ratings on the Focus are impressive.

But yeah, they have to make a real radical change to be relevant at all in this conversation about the great energy transition.
