Queen for a Day

Queen Elizabeth II encourages environmental protection

Posted at 3:05 PM on 10 Mar 2008

In her annual Commonwealth Day speech on Monday, Queen Elizabeth II had unusually pointed words regarding environmental protection. "The impact of pollution falls unequally," she said. "It is often those who pollute the least -- notably in the world's least-developed nations -- who are closest to the razor's edge and most affected by the impact of climate change and least equipped to cope with it." She encouraged all Commonwealthers to contribute to solving the crisis. "Whatever we do, wherever we live, our actions in defense of the environment can have a real and positive effect upon the lives of others, today and in the future," she said. "Future generations should enjoy clean air, sufficient fresh water, and energy without risking damage to the planet." We feel inspired. And we desperately wish we had a British accent.

Her Poor Majesty

Who knows what she really thinks and feels?  She certainly wants to do what she can to preserve the relevance of her throne and her family ("A bunch of child-molesters!," screams an anti-royalist pal from Massachusetts), as well as the relevance of the Commonwealth itself.

Meanwhile, if anyone is listening, and is inspired, those are fine words.
