Romney criticized McCain on climate, and more election news

In his victory speech after triumphing in the South Carolina Democratic primary on Saturday, Barack Obama called on Americans to come together to make "energy cleaner" -- but environmental issues weren't a notable factor in the state's contest. Green concerns are more visible in Florida, where Republicans are currently duking it out in advance of Tuesday's primary there. On Sunday, campaigning in the state, Mitt Romney bashed John McCain's Senate climate-change bill, claiming it would put a "financial burden" on Americans and kill 300,000 jobs. But McCain got a boost this weekend when he won the endorsement of Florida's popular and climate-conscious governor, Charlie Crist. "I'm honored and privileged," McCain said. "And I intend to work very closely with [Crist] on the issues. ... We are going to have to work together to save the Everglades and other great environmental treasures of this state." McCain sounded less green in last week's GOP debate, in which he double-talked his way through an explanation of his climate bill.

Government and the Everglades

The federal and state government are the worst offenders when it comes to poluting the everglades, why do you think they could ever manage to clean it up?

SFWMD is primarily responsible for the mess the glades are in! They proposed pumping grey water into the glades in a stupidly designed way to avoid actually needing to clean sewage, and when the results was total collapse of the eco-system, the federal government fined them millions of dollars for the ill-conceived plan. Now the same federal government is paying SFWMD to clean up their own mess (and btw, pay their fine back to the feds?)

And nobody will touch the other major source of pollution, Big-sugar! They dump tons of fertilizer run-off every year into what "used to be" a low-nutrient system, and walk away every year with their fat subsidy checks and no regulation.

And then there is the City of Miami, who in a classic boondoggle, proposed pumping grey-water into the lower aquifer (>3000 feet) as their no-cost solution to sewage treatment. Only problem is, they only drilled the seven massive wells to 2800 feet (missing the aquifer cap) and now can't do anything else but continually pump over a million gallons a day into the brackish water aquifer (and already notice the percolation effects on the drinking water aquifer).
