China unveils plan to fix polluted lakes

Posted at 3:35 PM on 23 Jan 2008

China has unveiled a plan to limit pollution in its lakes by 2010 and return lakes to their original, unpolluted state by 2030. Officials have specific plans to attain their goal: strictly regulate release of wastewater, close factories that heavily contribute to water pollution, improve sewage treatment, remove or limit fish farms, and ban highly toxic pesticides and phosphorus-containing detergents near large lakes. China's three largest lakes provide drinking water for millions -- or at least they do when giant algae blooms aren't rendering the water undrinkable.

Ya know...

...with the Olympics on the way, China sure seems to be rampin' up it's efforts to protect the environment.  But am I the only one who's a bit skeptical that their plans will lack enforcement and fall by the wayside like they have so many times before?

I hope they don't, but all I'm sayin' is that maybe we shoudl hold off the celebrations and take their "promises" with a pinch of salt until we see some results.

you're not alone

yep, I'm with you on the skeptic side of the yard.  But let 'em talk, I'm still not changing my mind about things over there until I see real change.  I can help them out a bit by not buying their poisoned products.  There, a little cleaner already.
