Renewing Renewables

Tax incentives for clean energy not yet renewed -- but probably will be

Posted at 10:24 AM on 20 Dec 2007

A renewal of tax incentives for building and installing clean energy sources was stripped from the recently signed energy bill, putting wind and solar boosters just a wee bit on edge. Current federal tax credits for renewable energy will expire at the end of 2008; Rhone Resch of the Solar Energy Industries Association predicts that U.S. solar installations, which jumped 80 percent in 2007, will "start to drop off in the second quarter of 2008 if [tax incentives] are not extended." But all is not lost: Leaders in both chambers of Congress have promised to revisit the tax-credit issue in the new year.

Hopeful for 2008

Whether or not tax credits can get pushed through this administration, this is a great opportunity for the next president to make a real impact on domestic renewable energy. It is only becoming more clear as time goes by how important it is to invest in renewables, and after another year, with ever more examples to look to in Europe and even in Asia, perhaps the US will finally demonstrate the leadership in this area for which we've been waiting.

It's A Renewable Christmas

Here's something they should sell in the Grist Store:

HYmini Charges Gadgets With Wind and Solar Power

This universal charger, which works with most MP3 players and cellphones, is the first to soak up both wind and, using an optional attachment, solar power.

Uncertainty is the worst thing for the industry

I just wrote a blog about how this hurts the industry as a whole. It virtually places all long term planning in large scale wind and solar at a standstill and causes the renewable industry to spend more of its extremely limited political  influence and money to get the tax credits renewed.
