Fair Trade?

WTO may slash tariffs on green goods

Posted at 4:42 PM on 03 Dec 2007

The United States and European Union have proposed that the 151 members of the World Trade Organization agree to slash tariffs on at least 43 "green" goods -- solar panels, wind turbines, and the like -- to boost their global use. A recent World Bank study suggested that removing such barriers to trade of clean-energy technologies could increase trade by up to 14 percent annually.

How far?

Wow. That sounds really cool on the face of it, but of course the devil is in the details. Another article here mentions how the question of how to include biofuels and 'energy crops' will make getting something like this passed tricky.

What's good about this?  Global trade is very environmentally harmful (for example, the latest oil spill in San Francisco Bay that killed or injured at least 2,700 birds, among other things).  Instead of lowering tariffs, what would be good would be each area of the world producing its own solar panels etc.
