  • Taxes work!

You seem to state that taxing gasoline would not be an extremely effective method of reducing oil consumption just because conservatives came up with it.  That is offensive.

Sean's opinion that CAFE has worked is hard to fathom given all the loop holes in CAFE standards (read up on the exemption for Flexfuel vehicles under CAFE).  Sean should also do a little reading about the fines that most car companies pay because they don't comply with CAFE.  Oh, and those same standards went unchanged for 20+ years because of politics.

Taxes on oil and coal consumption would be highly effective.  Yes, it depends on the level of taxation.  But any regulatory scheme is dependent on how strict it is.  Cap and trade would be equally ineffective if caps were set too high or the cost of trading too low.

Liberals would be well served to get on board with taxation if conservatives are willing to consider it.  We need action now, not a never ending debate about the best way to do it.  We are finally starting to realize that carbon based energy needs to be more expensive.  So lets do something to make it more expensive.

Oh and yeah, I do think a tax would be much more transparent and a much more practical way to do this.  On Conservative touts gas tax as cure to all ills, alternative to other climate/energy policies posted 10 months, 2 weeks ago 6 Responses

  • Go Congestion Pricing!

WOW! Congestion pricing getting attention on both the West Coast and the East Coast.
(remember Mayor Bloomberg's proposal on Earth Day?) Are politicians finally facing up to the cold hard facts about true costs of congestion in our cities?
