When I was a kid, I thought that the adults in my family were so corny, when they responded to questions of what they wanted for Christmas with answers such as:  "All I want is your love." or "I want world peace."

Now as an adult, I realize that they're right.  With occasional exceptions (such as wedding or baby showers, when people are trying to set up a household or a new family member), most of us don't really need gifts on special occasions.  And if we think about it, what we really want is usually not material - we want love and peace.  If you make efforts to give those in a special way to your loved ones, that's hardly selfish. On Are you brave enough to say no to a high-stress holiday? posted 2 years ago 51 Responses
