The Dell - UNICOR Connection
An important earlier chapter in UNICOR's recycling of e-waste involves Dell Inc., which until July 2003 used UNICOR to process its reclaimed computers. Activists from the Texas Campaign for the Environment and the Computer TakeBack Campaign organized a "high-tech chain gang" at the 2003 Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show to raise this issue. Ultimately, Dell changed its policy and ceased using UNICOR to process its recycled computers. See David Wood and Robin Schneider, "ToxicDude.com: The Dell Campaign" in Challenging the Chip: Labor Rights and Environmental Justice in the Global Electronics Industry (Temple University Press, 2006).
