Feeding, walking, cleaning, and otherwise caring for a pet, especially one rescued from the pound, is an extremely valuable experience for any of us, especially a kid. How better to learn to take care of "nature" than to have a dog say 'feed me!' or 'walk me!'? The environment is not as in-your-face-demanding, but a dog will help your son learn valuable life lessons.
Pet's teach us to care for others and may help us develop empathy for those who are different from us, dogs make us go for walks -- sometimes out in the wild places, and if you save an animal from death by rescuing it from the pound you gain major good karma points. :-)

When you wash cloth diapers at home, the water goes to exactly the same place and is treated in the same way that your toilet waste water is treated. Yet somehow washing soiled diapers comes out in these studies as more toxic than the child being potty trained!?! What's wrong with this picture?
While I'm on this topic: When you use paper diapers, that waste goes into the dump and is not treated. This makes for an even more toxic waste dump.On Umbra Fisk on the great diaper debate posted 1 year ago 11 Responses
Some noise is to be expected
Nader's making his usual noise -- can anybody hear it?
Unfortunately, I don't think that it's going to do any actual good as far as getting his ideas across (which is too bad, because they are good ideas) or garnering actual votes. At this point he's become a caracature of himself and nobody takes him seriously.
People who are excited about a candidate won't vote for him, but he may get votes from folks who feel that they are otherwise given the choice of the lesser of two evils.
He won't steal my vote from either of the Democrats in the race for President.
