  • I'm glad to see generic/store brand organics

I am a working mother of a 14 month old daughter.  My family is solidly in the lower income working class.  In rural Kansas, we can't afford to and certainly don't have access to the high end, high design stores the likes of Whole Foods.  I am proud that our Dillon's Grocery chain is expanding its private label organic offerings. We wouldn't be able to afford to eat organic otherwise. Eating organic should be a right for everyone and not just a social statement of wealthy white folks in urban areas.  On Umbra on store-brand organics posted 11 months, 3 weeks ago 8 Responses

  • whiskey barrel and a hand pump

    Umbra,
Some of my favorite childhood memories are from a rual farm in south Georgia - talk about HOT!  My sister and I spent many hours sitting in the bottom half of a whiskey barrel that we filled with fresh cold water we pumped with the old red hand pump.  I can remember the smell of the hot charred inside of the barrel as the first splash of cold water hit the sides.  I think you can find a version of these wooden barrels at local hardware stores - now my folks plant tomatoes and potatoes in those old barrels. On Umbra on kiddie pools posted 1 year, 5 months ago 11 Responses
