  • Wal mart - plastic in more ways than one!

I was recently personally disappointed in the corporate monster that is Wal Mart.  Despite all the rhetoric about environmental awareness and cutting their carbon footprint - I recently tried to make suggestion to Wal Mart to further significantly reduce the effect their 1,336 suparmarket stores containing 37,453 checkouts are having on the environment.
I distribute reusable grocery bags (www.cleangreenbags.com) for under $1 each.  Reusable bags have been successfully used in most other parts of the world to reduce the number of plastic bags consumed every year.  In some cases reducing usage rates by as much as 95% in 12 months.  In the US alone we consume between 380 and 500 billion of these bags per year.  It has been estimated that 53% of these bags are distributed by supermarkets.  5% of these are recycled the rest end up as waste.
Wal Mart could help save our environment by encouraging shoppers through discounts or free bags to rewards customers. This was my simple suggestion - but simply getting in touch with anyone that will listen has proven impossible.  The only way this initiative will take off at Wal Mart is if their consumers start demanding action. On An interview with Wal-Mart CEO H. • A small step in the right direction

Congratulations CA for taking the lead on this!  Or is it just rhetoric in an election year?  How many loopholes have been designed in to provide big business and politicians an easy way to squirm out of doing the right thing (again!).  At the end of the day the only way significant strides are going to be made is if the public push for it.  And every family has the ability to do the little things that count, whether it be turning off lights, saving water or using cheap, strong a reliable reusable shopping bags (www.cleangreenbags.com).  There is no excuse for apathy.

Paper and Plastic bags are KILLING our environment - start using reusable bags today!
