  • NOx or No NOx

Interesting as the debate over NOx emissions may be, I'm still curious why the issue of fuel economy and its relationship to dependence on foreign fossil fuels doesn't seem to factor in here. Biodiversist, you have said in your most recent post that "The larger debate isn't whether or not biodiesel cars pollute more than gasoline cars, it is whether or not biodiesel, depending on how it is produced, will end up doing more  harm than good."  You then go on to remind us that this is not the theme of the current debate between (primarily) you and Greenstork.

I'm simply asking, why not?  NOx pollution is surely only one of the factors to be considered in the debate on the relative "greeness" of any vehicle.  As far as I know, nobody in my neighborhood is selling home-grown gasoline - super low emissions or not - and that means buying (and often fighting for) fossil fuel that belongs to someone else.  That my VW Golf TDI consistently gets over 50 mpg and can run on a more locally produced product seems to me to be a very good thing.

  • What about fossil fuels?

I'm totally new to Grist.  I'm reading this string of posts with interest as I'm something of a biodiesel fan and drive a VW Golf.  What I want to ask (perhaps I missed this somewhere) is about dependence on foreign oil?  There's a lot of fuss about about emissions, but what about doing whatever we can to increase our mpg's and get ourselves weaned off our dependence on war-making fossil fuel?  It's not ideal, but isn't this a good start?
