I think another tip is to think about gifts that are truly useful-- if it's something that the recipient is going to buy either way, it's less extra-consumption.  We're giving kid-made tissue-paper-collage stationery cards and bottles of wine to people we know use such things.  I am also a huge fan of thoughtful regifting and thrift store shopping! On How to green your giving posted 11 months, 3 weeks ago 5 Responses

  • wrapping crafty

yes, with children it's easier -- I save those big brown/tan papers that come as mailing packaging and set the kid loose with paints, big crayons, stamps, etc.  With a little raffia they make lovely (and big) sheets of wrapping paper.   plus, it's a fun project on its own. (if they are crumpled, we just finish crushing them so they look intentionally so.)  lovely! On Umbra on wrapping paper posted 11 months, 3 weeks ago 1 Response

  • try another approach

If you're expecting a baby, please read about Natural Infant Hygiene-- you won't believe it can work, but it does!  The premise is that even tiny babies can eliminate on a signal.  You don't have to be a nut to do it -- with my little one, we give her the option to use the potty before we re-diaper her and although we don't catch every pee or poop we use many fewer diapers (and wipes) - about three a day.  Our experience with our 4yo showed that potty training is incredibly hard for a child who has been in super absorbent diapers since day 1.  I think the other rarely-discussed downside of these new materials is that kids have a harder time potty training if they are used to them, and so they stay in diapers for years longer -- years!  that's a lot of extra trash.  On A review of disposable eco-diapers posted 1 year, 1 month ago 10 Responses
