  • Detoxing

Several years ago, I read the book The Hundred Year Lie which is all about the toxins in our environment and in our bodies.  The author had himself tested for a wide variety of toxins and then did a several week detox (at Hippocrates Health Center, I think) and had himself retested, and there were significant decreases.  So there is something to detoxing, but, as always, hucksters abound, especially on late-night infomercials. On Umbra on toxins in your body posted 1 year, 3 months ago 13 Responses

  • Recumbent Trikes

I rode a recumbent trike for about 7 years (most of those years sans car), and for the last 3 years I have been on a recumbent bike.  Without a doubt, I much prefer the trike; despite the extra weight, it is feels much safer to ride in the city as I don't have to focus any attention on balance, and drivers give me more room as I am clearly three dimensional.  I never found hills to be any more of a problem than on the bike, as long as you have good low gears.  And it's fun... my bike mechanic once called it a "Ferrari."

You should definitely check out the recumbent trikes, as there are a wide variety of different styles and much better gear ranges and equipment than most upright trikes.  The brands I can think of off the top of my head are Catrike, ICE, Greenspeed, Lightfoot, HP Velo, and Wizwheels.

But, as much as I am a recumbent enthusiast, the most important thing is to get something that you'll be happy riding... and get out there and ride!On Umbra on adult tricycles posted 1 year, 4 months ago 16 Responses

  • rights?

I would just like to clarify something.  While I'm sure animal welfare organizations would applaud these sort of rules, they really do nothing as far as the animals' rights are concerned.  As long as animals are property they cannot have any meaningful rights.  While it is certainly good that these animals will suffer a bit less, they will still be killed solely because we like the taste of their flesh.

Also to expand on wiscidea's post, we need to start seeing the connection amongst all forms of oppression and discrimination, and develop a coherent ethical system which includes all sentient beings in our moral community.

See www.abolitionistapproach.com for someone who can express this far more eloquently than me.On China drafting rules for humane slaughter of livestock posted 1 year, 11 months ago 6 Responses
