  • Beijing "clean coal" plant is a fraud

I have visited the showcase 850 MW "clean coal" plant at Huaneng Beijing Co-Generation Co. As a field trip during this year's China Power & Alternative Summit. The tour group was led to believe that the large building that collected CO2 made this a "clean coal" plant. What they didn't tell us was that only 3000 tonnes of CO2 is collected per year. This means that 99.9% of the CO2 produced is released into the atmosphere!!!!
This is a typical fraudulant attempt to pretend that clean coal is anything more than an oxymoron.
They were also distributing free issues of the Carbon Capture Journal at the show.
The coal industry spends millions on such disinformation campaigns.
Since typical coal plants emit 850kg of CO2/MWh, a rough estimate of the annual output of this plant is .85x850x24x365= 6.3 million tonnes of CO2/year.
A much better place to spend research money is on EGS Geothermal power, which is a practical reality.

  • Geothermal is here, now, economical

In the real world geothermal is already generating more power than wind and solar combined. Ormat is a $1.4 billion company completely dedicated to geothermal power generation. They already have 900 MW of generation and are consistantly profitable selling power at prices competitive with clean coal (about 6 cents per kwh)
Most of their plants are in geothermal areas but improved drilling thecniques may soon make geothermal economical throughout the world.

  • Geothermal is already cheaper than clean coal!

I completely agree that coal is a disaster and will probably never be economical with sequestration. Geothermal is already competitive and reliable and unlike wind, it works 24/7. The latest MIT study says that geothermal can be used economically even without hot springs by copying the water injection technique used on oilwells. Ormat (ORA on the NYSE) is already doing this profitably and with excellent reliability. They currently have 900 MW in operation and have orders for 200 MW in New Zealand and 380 MW in Indonesia.
