  • Empty calories, empty article

"Calories are a questionable proxy for deciding what's worse for you."  Exactly.  Until you start talking about what else is in the meal - fat content, protein, etc - you can't judge a meal just on calories.

And I'm no big believer that sugar is evil (except for maybe HFCS).  Yes that smoothie may have more sugar than a chocolate frosted donut, but it probably has 0 grams of fat compared to the 2 grams in the donut.  How about bagels?  A bagel with cream cheese can pack a whopping 13 grams of fat and twice the calories of a donut.

Overall I agree with the message though. All restaurants should do better at letting you know exactly what you are eating.  But expecting to eat a healthy meal at just about any chain restaurant is foolish, and hopefully if you are an adult you've learned that you can't trust ads or marketing to tell you the truth.

  • Absolutely nuts

So prisons must be very good for the environment, eh?

Sport utility vehicles should also be recognized as better for the environment in some ways as well then - if a big family can buy one SUV instead of two sedans, and drive around together as opposed to in two cars, that's a big win for the environment.

This is just one nutty conclusion.  I don't even know how to respond really.  Do ecologists think that people ENJOY divorce and do it for fun?  Has this ecologist ever even been in a relationship?

Coming up with crazy off the wall and drastic ideas for how we should completely change our life for the sake of the environment isn't going to help.  It's only going to anger and distance you from the people who are on the fence about climate change and all that.

What next, a divorce tax?  Or will someone conclude that people with long hair use more water and soap to wash their hair and recomend that we all shave our heads?  Or that no couple should have more than one child, or perhaps even no children?  Mandatory birth control for everyone?

Seriously Grist, this article is beneath you.

  • Heifer.org

I wonder if PETA is against Heifer.org, which provides animals to people in poor countries.  They don't usually eat the animals mind you, but they do eat their eggs, drink their milk, sell the animal's children, etc.  Would it be better for those people to die as vegans than live as non-vegans?
