  • Gray water irrigation and portabello mushroom slime are several orders of magnitude more benign than the issues brought up in the article... I think Philpott is exactly on point.

I'm also pretty sure you're making your beer wrong...

  • a $200,000 mortage is more like $1600 a month - and that's at 4.5%... not sure where you're getting $700 a month from.

  • I've seen solar ovens before, but not one that was made out of such common and inexpensive materials... there's gotta be a reason. On Kyoto stove wins $75,000 FT climate change innovation competition posted 7 months, 3 weeks ago 17 Responses
  • ok, now you're killing me.  Certainly not 50/50 either - the exact proportions are unknown to me.  How about just fixing whatever problems we can find, including both of these?

Oh, and if I had to bet, I'd bet that it was mostly the first world's fault - we're the ones that have the machines to multiply productivity, and productivity = CO2.

  • It's not just one or the other!  Damn the Western binary thinking!  Either the first worlders OR the hut dwellers - it couldn't possibly be a mix of the two?

There are millions of poor people in the "developing" world that go out and cut down forests to burn for fuel... the forests are a carbon sink, which is destroyed in this process, and the burning creates more greenhouse gases.

We are, despite this, still driving our cars and expelling greenhouse gases AT THE SAME TIME.  BOTH things are happening SIMULTANEOUSLY.  AT THE SAME TIME.

  • VP <> "anything you want"

Even Cheney can't do Anything He Wants as vice-president.  I don't think you understand the stranglehold that polluters have on our government.  Exxon-Mobil, Duke Energy, etc and so on, pretty much own outright many members of Congress, and strategically, so that they can stop legislation that will decrease their profits.

  • Matching gifts...?

This could easily be used as a gimmick, and may, as a result, not even be true (of course, Grist would never do such a thing), but many charities woo donors with double or triple matching gifts, promising that an anonymous donor will match any amount given during a particular time period.  If, in fact, this is true, you could multiply your donation this way by using it to shoehorn money out of a volunteer rich person... :-)

On a side note, Umbra (or anyone else), do you know if there are laws requiring matching gifts to be real?On Umbra on green donations posted 1 year, 10 months ago 21 Responses
