  • Confirmed Bird Flu Transmission to Mammal

A cat in Germany was recently found dead of avian flu.  Since domestic cats are all too often let out to "explore", an obvious partial answer is for cat owners to keep their pets indoors at all times.  American Bird Conservancy - www.abcbirds.org -  has had just such a campaign for several years, for birds' sake.  Now it can be for humans', too.

  • Re-Build the Big Easy? NOT IN A MILLION YEARS

My father, Frederick P. Wiesinger, was a renowned structural engineer, and he once said he had to prop up a job botched by another company on more than ten thousand cardboard boxes.
There's no chance of even that measure of help for "the City That Care Forgot", because no matter what kind of buildings, green or conventional, are planned for the New Orleans area, no-one can stop them from sinking!
No buildings there can ever be stable, therefore, NO building should occur. On In which we ask a mess of smart people what should happen in New Orleans posted 4 years, 1 month ago 3 Responses

  • Bike Rights/Wrongs

Yes, bikes CAN go on the sidewalk, but remember the pedestrians in your town probably take a dim view of such, and there may be ordinances forbidding it for their sake.  Chicago is actively ticketing bikers who use certain congested neighborhoods' sidewalks, because cyclists are required to follow the same traffic laws that apply to motorists; Sunnyvale, CA, lets the biker decide to go - cautiously - on a sidewalk if to go on the streets would be dangerous: it's the biker's call.
Moral: know the laws and obey them, or challenge them in the voting booth.
