  • When hell freezes over

Your column has promise in terms of subject matter, but I agree with a previous comment, there is way too much verbiage to wade through to get to the point.  In other words, clean out the clutter! On Why freezer burn matters, and how to avoid it posted 1 year, 2 months ago 5 Responses

  • Farmers Markets

Excellent point!  I only purchase eggs, poultry, fish(wild caught & smoked), dried beans, fruits & vegetables from our local farmer's market.  They have organic flours and breads.  There are cheeses from all over the world, spices and herbs.  There are vendors who sell fresh & smoked pork/beef/lamb/and turkey.

It is a T-Th-Sat. indoor/outdoor(weather permiting operation) that has been in existence for over 50 years.  Seasonal items are added, such as flats for planting gardens and landscaping/flower gardens in the spring and summer. Holiday items such as Christmas trees/Halloween pumpkins, etc. are available.

Our market is city owned property, with an independent manager.  They have special functions year round such as chili cookoffs.  In the summer there are outdoor food vendors selling bar-b-que, mexican, greek, soul food, and an ice cream stand.

The demand is there.  The market master last year also started a program at the market to bring organic farmers together with consumers willing to purchase shares in the products of a farmer's operation, using the market location as a distribution point.

  • Better Meat, Lower Price

You are absolutely right about going to a local farmer for your meat and also poultry and eggs.  Not only that, the meat is processed at a small local meat processing plant where the farmer knows the owners and the sanitary conditions at the facility.  I have been doing this for 3 years and I will never make my purchases at the grocery store again.

I also shop at the local farmer's market and purchase ALL of my fruits and vegetables there.  There are also vendors who carry cheese, spices, beans, freshly ground flours and meals, wild caught fish from the Great Lakes and Canada.  A local turkey farmer has any type of turkey product which was processed in house.

This year I have talked the neighborhood association into a neighborhood garden, and we can even apply for a local grant so that the garden space can be fenced in.  What we are unable to eat during the season, I will can and freeze.

Years ago our family used to have family canning sessions with the assistance of the children.  My adult children still remember the fun and closeness of working together.

There are avenues for each of us to secure a safer source of food at a more reasonable cost no matter where we live.  It may take more work on our parts but personally I think the quality of the food is much better and it is worth the time and effort. On Rising food prices hit home around the world posted 1 year, 8 months ago 10 Responses
