Relative Expense
If u think it's expensive in the US consider that in Ireland it's estimated to cost 10,000 a year to keep a regular family car.
Yet every day there seems to be more SUVs on the streets.
It's similar in many European countries though in most there's a good public transport system: that's not the case here.On Cars are more expensive than you think posted 2 years, 4 months ago 6 Responseslightbulbs!
Did anyone find the emphasis on lightbulbs a bit annoying? sure, energy-efficient lightbulbs are great but the idea that people are doing their bit by using them and can carry on driving SUVs and taking flights and buying stuff they don't need from China is laughable.On A Grist correspondent sweats her way through Live Earth posted 2 years, 4 months ago 12 Responses
Blue = Green?
In one way the Tories are a green party as their natural constituency is the aristocratic upper class who own most of the green space in britain.
Cameron's efforts appear to be well-meaning but the party isn't called the conservative party for nothing, and it's organs like the Daily mail and telegraph are foaming at the mouth at his efforts to be more inclusive and environmentally friendly.
As pointed out, some of his efforts to appear green have been a bit ham-fisted, like cycling to work with a lexus in tow, or travelling to visit a retreating glacier by private jet.
the tories won't win the next election.
the only people who won't remember the horrors of the last 5 years of the last tory government are first-time voters, and they only vote in big brother polls.On Brit's Eye View: Britain's Conservatives challenge Labour for mantle of greenest party posted 3 years, 2 months ago 6 Responses
Too Little, Too Late
In Brown's last budget he finally succumbed to pressure to place vehicle tax on SUVs but left it at a miserable GBP40 per annum; as petrol costs nearly 4 pounds a gallon, this is a pittance.
As if this isn't enough, he kowtowed to middle class voters by agreeing to continue with Britain's new independent nuclear deterrent, trident.
The good news is that Brown hates to travel outside the UK, so that might reduce the governments ecological footprint a tad.
This is more than can be said for David Cameron, who went to Norway to see the impact of Gloabl Warming on retreating glaciers... by Private Jet!
