...and the baking soda?
Hiya - no leavening agent appears in the cake recipe. How much baking soda should we be using?
Otherwise, a very intriguing recipe!

SUVs are just the most recent problem
Surely the real problems for GM have more to do with their humongous financial obligations, such as retirees' health benefits. It's true to say that current sales aren't keeping up with these liabilities (due in part to high gas prices making large vehicles less attractive), but this is the trajectory GM - and all the rest of Big Auto - have been heading for decades, long before the SUV trend took root. SUVs provided a brief reprieve for a few years, thanks to their high margins, but the deeper problems wouldn't go away if gas prices suddenly dropped - it would just take a bit longer for the axe to finally fall.On GM unveils Chevy Volt 'production model' at 100th birthday celebration posted 1 year, 2 months ago 3 Responses
Was this really necessary?
Unless I've missed something, a person's underwear doesn't strike me as such an important factor in their environmental impact. Can you show any actual evidence of real impact you can make by buying any of the underwear you recommend above (not to mention the $2,000 dresser to put them in)? Bearing in mind that most of us cling onto our smalls for years, it seems to me that the difference between the "eco" stuff and the normal - factored over the lifetime of the garments - is vanishingly small. Want to make a difference via your underwear? Wash them in cold water. As for the bamboo, hemp and organic drawer sachets - forget it. Not worth the trouble. On How to green your underwear drawer posted 1 year, 7 months ago 7 Responses
It might taste better than you think...
Lee Scott recently observed that if every household in America had just one single compact fluorescent light bulb, replacing one old-fashioned incandescent, it would eliminate the U.S.'s dependence on foreign oil. Now I realize that doesn't mean it will eliminate the U.S.'s dependence on all oil, but you must admit, that's a hell of a lot. It doesn't turn Wal-Mart into a green-living granola co-op, but it does underscore the sheer scale and, ultimately, power of such a huge retailer. I'd be happy to try my luck at shifting Wal-Mart a little bit and watch the unexpectedly large pay-off roll in.
Secondly, I wish people would lay off poor ol' Charlie - he's a figure of global leadership, for goodness' sake. If Al Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize, is anyone going to try to prevent him from flying to Oslo to receive it? On But Wait, There's More posted 2 years, 9 months ago 4 Responses
Methinks he doth protest too much
So let me get this straight: David Roberts is galled at the suggestion that environmentalists are overly literal. But he agrees with it. As he does with the central thesis of 'Death', which is that environmentalists' concept of 'the environment' is too limited. It seems to me that Roberts' big problem is that Shellenberger and Nordhaus aren't being nice enough to the environmentalists who (with great sincerity and passion for what they do) have failed to achieve the sort of traction needed to get things done. Sounds like S&N hit close to the bone, and Roberts' wounded defensiveness indeed speaks volumes.
