  • CO2 balance

Don't you know that CTL fuel has a better energy efficiency than current transportation fuels? That results in better CO2 emission numbers for CTL fuels. While proving the air force wrong, you make exactly the same mistake in the other direction.
And what about the other emissions? CTL fuels emit FAR less particle and sulphur emissions, resulting in MUCH cleaner fuels overall. That used to be an important issue, but now some consider it to be inconvenient, so it is NEVER mentioned. CTL is MUCH better than current transportation fuels, and it can be mixed with bio material, resulting in better CO2 emissions overall. Don't fight the only hope for a reasonable way of life. • Romm is a CTL fool

To say that CTL is not cost effective without a good price for CO2 is ridiculous, because the cost effectiveness of CTL has been determined WITHOUT the additional revenue stream for CO2.
CTL is profitable with an oil price of 40 to 45 dollars per barrel. Add an extra revenue stream and the picture becomes even better.
CTL (with CO2 sequestration) is inevitable, and will be very big in the US.
There is NO other solution to keep transport going when the second leg of rising oil prices brings it to 100 dollars and beyond. Be a patriot and help CTL (with CO2 sequestration) along, don't help bringing the US society down by working against it.

  • Liquefied Coal

To say liquefied coal has a big impact on CO2 emissions is like saying that having running water in the kitchen is cause for wet floors. The solutions are there, and have been working for 40 years. I applaud candidate Richardson for wanting to apply carbon limits on ALL liquid fuels, and not just alternatives like liquefied coal fuels, like others want. A level playing field is what is needed to solve the problem of fuel shortages that will become apparent when the oil prices go up further.
And, I predict we ain't seen nothing yet with regard to oil prices rising.
BTW, to paint the scale: If we want to compensate the shortage in supply of crude oil with Nuclear, we will have to bring a new reactor online every week until 2050. • Coal to Liquids

I feel that when we are talking about developing an alternative (CTL) to current petroleum based fuels, it is somewhat unfair to put in a pre-requisite that it has to emit 20% less CO2 than current solutions. Any technology that is in its infant stages needs a level playing field. Mind you, I would be FOR putting that 20% pre-requisite for CTL in place, but I think in that case you would have to be FOR the exact same cap of 20% on CO2 emissions from current petroleum based fuels. Then the government would take the lead without influencing the free market.
Watch what the oil prices will do, and you'll know we can't do without CTL, which is much cleaner than anything we have that is petroleum based. Don't give it a disadvantage compared to current dirtier 'solutions'
