  • US Chamber Of Commerce IS an organization crusading for corruption--wish it was stopped!!! The Chamber's Nixon-style outlaw reputation exceeds that of ACORN, hellbent on influencing elected Congressional-state-local officials, with millions in unethical, unscrutinized contributions, and without fearing any legal/punative consequences. On Corporations call off the old green battle, but Chamber of Commerce soldiers on [UPDATED] posted 2 months ago 4 Responses
  • As I thought, most colleges in the South and Mid-Atlantic states have yet gone green, or adopted green policies. Policies promoting Greenness--even Democracy for people--have yet to arrived nor be fulfilled in those areas.

Surprised NYU made this list--it should NOT be part of it!--the off-campus areas, and the entire "CITY" of New York is trashy everywhere you look--the area looks like a third-world undeveloped ghetto--as does nearby New Jersey.

  • I can tell you this, from experiences working there [I grew up west of the Mississippi]--People in NYC do not work hard [epicenter of global financial crisis] and they could care less [have no human feelings] about preserving the environment for the rest of the United States-They are culturally indifferent/unschooled about America beyond Manhattan, and probably could not even find Washington State on a map--they would resort to use a GPS instead.

  • NYC, LA, Chicago and Dallas cannot accurately be called "sustainable"--They have SEVERE ecological problems and often take a backwards approach to preserving the environment and thus need to be striked from this list. This list becomes a joke with these four included.

I'm pretty sure whoever compiled this list performed biased, unscientific research, or must be from one of these four cities.

  • Find it interesting that Democratic Sen. Menendez of New Jersey praised the new presence of Mr. Franken [from a top-ranked environmental quality state: Minnesota] on The ED Show, yet Menendez and Democratic Sen. Lautenberg voted like Deep South Republicans on providing major federal assistance to improve Jersey's ecological status.

Anyone traveling across Jersey's cities [especially those closest to NYC] can see heavy piles of rotting trash and litter along streets, sidewalks and parks--scenes expected to be found more from the third-world than in our "first-world" nation.

Maybe Al can teach these two (and numeorus state, county and township) "public servants" a thing or two, to get their filthy, inhumane environmental conditions across the so-called "Garden State" in first-nation order by voting for tougher federal cleanup mandates to states and localities.

  • Houston's Mayor Bill White (and Mayor Phil Hardberger of San Antonio) are NOT worthy to be deemed Green mayors--in America, or Texas, for that matter.  Dallas and Austin are the two Texas cities with the most pronounced GREEN policies, but are sadly not recognized by GRIST. Houston and San Antonio have the lowest rates for total collected trash recycled for America largest cities (a terrible TWO and FOUR percent recycled total trash for Houston and San Antonio, respectively!) Also, Houston, on Mayor White's watch, received EPA's "Worst Urban Air Pollution" designation. Houston still notoriously lacks a citywide ordinance that protects both land use and the environment. Houston, is absolutely a POOR CHOICE for a large populated US city caling itself GREEN--its at the bottom, not top, of urban environmental performances.

  • For an East Coast City-Providence is Clean! Unlike Mayor Healey of Jersey City, Mr. Cicilline deserves kudos for his work and for the Ocean State.

  • Jersey City's Healey is a POOR, seemingly unqualified Green choice for a public servant.

Jersey City and most of urban New Jersey around NYC have terrific litter/trash removal problems.

How can a mayor be ethically be called "Green" when he and city/state officials do not enforce/violate state laws and allow trash to pile up on public streets for years? Some of the worst such rubbish conditions anywhere in the United States, but recognized as Positive?

Litter breeds vermin/dieseases and kills over 1,100 Americans annually in vehicle-related accidents (NHTSA stats)

Go to Google and see my Powerpoint, "East Coast States with Bad, UGLY City/Urban Litter;"   "American State Litter Scorecard."

  • Yeah Waxman!

I expect MUCH better days ahead for the environmental movement thanks to Henry Waxman's continuing efforts!

  • I like Waxman!

I personally like Henry Waxman. He's aggressive than most Democrats in fighting both government and corporate corruption and, in the willingness to investigate these entities for improprieties.
I expect much better times ahead for the pro-environmental quality community due to his continued efforts.

  • Air cleaner; unhealthyTrash still on NYC streets!

You have to wade thru the unhealthy, "ungreen-like" pollution--trash/debris--to get to a cleaner-air cab. Trash/Debris breeds diseases and vermin and injures/kills humans, too, just as exhaust poisoning from cars. NYC still deserves an "F" when it comes to true environmental protection--on the the ground and in the air. • NYC region

New York and New Jersey are behind most of the USA on urban litter/debris removal and environmental law enforcement. Its a shame that government officials in these two jurisdictions appear to WORSHIP TRASH like a celebrated state symbol or "mascot." Having ugly litter/debris along highways, sidewalks, and public places is part of a long-term, accepted culture of living in the NYC. Litter does breeds diseases and injures/kills humans and wildlife. In 2005, at least 39 New York State and 23 New Jersey residents were killed by litter/debris related traffic accidents, according to NHTSA.
