  • Skepticism, healthy or not

The most eco-friendly thing Wal-Mart could do is stop building, period, and begin to locate its stores in downtowns, where the infrastructure already exists and, not coincidentally, most of the poor people who actually need cheap goods actually live.

Sadly, Wal-Mart has not yet embraced the notion of sustainability. If it continues on like this, our notion of success through consumption will force humans from this planet. Until it replaces the ethic of consumption with sustainability, anything Wal-Mart does should be greeted not only with skepticism but with well-deserved opposition. I will continue to boycott its stores and encourage everyone I know to do the same.On Wal-Mart lays out more environmental goals for itself, suppliers posted 1 year, 1 month ago 2 Responses

  • Soap

Like high fructose corn syrup, which is undergoing a PR makeover into a ``natural sweetener just like sugar'' (which doesn't absolve it or sugar of anything but makes it sound so harmless), we are being told that our children will die unless we kill every living bacteria in our homes. We need as  active a counter advertising campaign to tell people just what these things are doing to our bodies (giving us cancer) and our planet. As Thomas Friedman says in his new book ``Hot, Flat and Crowded'' we need to start being the Ark instead of the flood. • Shaklee Corporation

It's not a new company. In fact, it just celebrated  its 50th anniversary, but the Shaklee Corporation went green before many others even knew there were such serious issues. Not only does it make nutrition supplements that help keep people healthy -- this is no dig on doctors, but prevention is always better than cure -- but it built its foundation on nonpolluting, biodegradable cleaning products. In 2000 it was named the first company in the world to be completely climate neutral. It is working with several African countries to help them develop using solar power, and its business model is based on individuals working together to prosper. I suspect there are many other companies out there that may not be making huge splashes but nonetheless deserve to be emulated and honored for doing well by doing good. • why waste the momentum?

Gore might make a good president, but at this point he is more effective leading the global effort against climate change. U.S. presidential politics being what they are, there is too much of a possibility that he would have to compromise on this issue, and frankly, we don't have that kind of time. He is better outside the fray -- ask Colin Powell -- speaking and leading the effort that will, eventually prevail. On Gore calls for carbon freeze in major speech on climate solutions posted 3 years, 2 months ago 6 Responses
