biodiesel not so eco-friendly
I really think that the eco-press needs to be a bit less bubbly about this 'alternative energy'. I mean, running engines off of recycled cooking oil is great, but there's just not enough to run all our cars and trucks. And not only do biofuels release carbon, their monocrop cultivation tends to occur along with unsustainable agricultural practises and, especially in South America, massive deforestation to make room for the new crops - which results in huge loss of biomass, oxygen production, erosion, habitat destruction, extinction of species and, oh, yeah, the release of a huge amount of carbon.
(they ran an article about this in the Guardian recently)
Someone remind me again why this is supposed to be environmentally beneficial? On How South American biofuels are gaining steam, and why that freaks the U.S. out posted 3 years, 11 months ago 10 Responses
Throw them away???!!!???
I'm sorry, but I think it's really irresponsible to blithely advocate throwing functioning christmas tree lights in the rubbish. I mean, donate them to an art centre, or a charitable organisation, make a table centrepiece to stop using candles, do something with them, find out if there's anywhere in your area that will recycle them, but shouldn't the landfill always be the last resort? I'm disturbed to see Grist advocating the kind of disposable consumerism that is so poisonous to the ecological movement. On Umbra on LED holiday lights posted 3 years, 11 months ago 5 Responses
biodiesel
I don't think this answer gives enough cred to the idea of making one's own biodiesel - people have been doing it since before there were filling stations offering it, you could at least give a link telling the person how, in case they're interested. corn kitty litter
the 'World's Best' mentioned above sounds a lot like the President's Choice Green cat litter we use. The stuff is amazing. Naturally 'deodorising', naturally clumping, compostable, fully flushable, light, smells great (I know, what a concept), cleans up easily if it gets kicked across the floor, and a bag of the stuff lasts forever (even though it doesn't look like enough to last a week when you first buy it). I evangelise this product to every cat owner I come across, I think it's that great. On Umbra on kitty litter posted 4 years, 2 months ago 25 Responses
