One thing the article failed to clear up is whether male chicks are killed by every hatchery. If you saw the recent video of male chicks being sent to the grinder, you have to wonder, is every egg out there soaked with blood ? I wish I knew the answer but I assume that must be the case as even small producers "mail order" their chicks, and since only females are shipped, where are the males?

Shame on Grist for giving Glen Beck this much coverage.

the silliness. I applaud those who choose to be vegetarians or vegans. But let's make one thing clear, either of these choices are only fairly recent possibilities. Humans have had to rely on the meat of animals for most of their existence.
We have today a diverse variety of vegetables, nuts and seeds that can sustain a vegetarian/vegan, but that did not become possible until humans started traveling to different continents and exchanging plants.
I'm an organic vegetable farmer and life is life. Prejudice is what distinguishes animals from plants. Both are equally worthy. On To make the Thanksgiving centerpiece a sure triumph, go heritage -- and reach for the deep-fryer posted 1 year ago 5 Responses
I respectfully disagree...
If you are going to roast a turkey, do not baste it. That's right. Do not open the oven door. Put the bird inside, set a timer and forget about it until the timer goes off.
Everytime you open the oven door to baste, it increases the cooking time because the bird gets cooler and so does the oven. Not to mention that when you baste the juices don't get past the skin.
As far as deep frying, you sure do get some tasty birds that way. But the green way it's not, the amount of energy to create all that oil is very high.On To make the Thanksgiving centerpiece a sure triumph, go heritage -- and reach for the deep-fryer posted 1 year ago 5 Responses
Good article but...
there's really no need for "organic research". Research is usually done to try to circumvent necessary procedures such as crop rotation, green manures and fallowing. The research has already been done. Those who want to farm organically can do so. Those who want further research are just looking for an excuse. On Why a Bush veto of the farm bill is bad for the food movement (and the world) posted 1 year, 6 months ago 3 Responses
Where are the editors?
This is a ridiculous article and anyone with half a brain should be able to see how a process that requires chemicals and heat is not environmental.
The environmental choice is to be buried, not in a coffin of course. On Dissolving your corpse is the green way to go posted 1 year, 6 months ago 12 Responses
Organic Farming/Natural
omarsidd: Natural is meaningless. Products such as Snapple with high fructose corn syrup claim to be all natural. Check the ingredients of the so-called "All Natural" products for yourself and you'll see how ridiculous it is.
As for organic farming being less productive than corporate farming, it is not the case. Organic farming requires real farmers behind is not a mechanized process like the mono culture corporate farming.
The reason why corporate farming became the norm is simple; corporations. On Umbra on organic vs. natural foods posted 1 year, 7 months ago 10 Responses
