Interesting that the post about mountain top removal is right under the credit card ad.  The credit card is through Bank of America which has been funding mountain top removal for years. On EPA approves rule change making mountaintop-removal mining easier posted 11 months, 4 weeks ago 5 Responses

  • Lighter than 20 years ago

I finally learned to drive and bought a car around 20 years ago when I sheared off a toe clip in the middle of a busy (and steeply banked) intersection while towing my 2 kids from the park.  The trailer was made out of plywood and had a little seat in it that was not nearly as comfy looking as the modern kind.  Until the toe clip incident I biked them to day care and back every day and sometimes loaded groceries in there too.  I still have that old trailer and its still heavy. I use it for cargo because I have reverted to the bicycle way of life and no longer need the drivers license much.  The kids, now 21 and 23 also bike as much as they can.  The four of us at three addresses have been sharing one prius for about a year.On Umbra on biking with kids posted 1 year, 5 months ago 6 Responses

  • hauling with the road bike

My husband frequently hooks the trailer to his litespeed titanium bike to haul the groceries.  I go with a backpack in the foldable basket.  When I stop by the coop I get the stuffable chico bags out of the backpack, put those in the baskets and wear the backpack.  And I can still hitch up the really old rickety wooden platform trailer I used to haul my kids 20 years ago (pre-burley).  Our kids say we should get a little electric car to haul stuff around town, but I say our human-powered payload is bigger. On Umbra on cargo bikes posted 1 year, 7 months ago 29 Responses

  • bottle-free beer

I choose local (made in my town) and purchased in a returnable, reusable party pig.  There are no bottles to manufacture or recycle.  I wish it was organic, but I think it beats buying a bottle of organic beer from thousands of miles away.On A tasting of seven organic beers posted 1 year, 7 months ago 22 Responses

  • caffeine communting

The transport of hot caffeinated beverage has been essiential to my commute for years.  My coffee would stay hot enough in a little thermos even after a 25 minute ride at 25F.  Now that I shop by bike as well, I have neoprene sleeves designed for taking wine on a picnic (Every week is a picnic for us!).  Combining the two would preserve heat and lessen the risk of breakage.  My current commute is much shorter and I have taken to drinking all my coffee at home, but my coffee cup fits in my water bottle holder, so I can cart a beverage around town.On Umbra on transporting coffee by bike posted 1 year, 8 months ago 12 Responses
