  • No Seashells!

I love the ideas, but please don't hand out seashells for halloween (or any other time). Those shells are a home for something on the beach, and our nearshore zone is seriously lacking on the shell front. They are even thinking of putting out fake plastic shell homes for hermit crabs.

When visiting the beach, respect the home you're visiting and don't move the furniture around...or, gasp, steal it! Leave the shells on the beach! On How to green your Halloween posted 1 year, 1 month ago 2 Responses

  • Why is China an "emerging bad guy"?

Tibet, a country the size of Western Europe was one of the most pristine. No dams, no mining, forests were healthy and they had a large and diverse wildlife population.

Since China invaded deforestation has happened at an alarming rate, mining is uncontrolled, and they are polluting the source waters of most of the Asian continent, which originate in Tibet.

See this website for the most recent report of the environmental degradation caused by the Chinese occupation of Tibet.

I wouldn't say China is an emerging bad guy, I think we are finally recognizing what has been happening for the last 50 years. On Greenpeace India points out the obvious posted 1 year, 11 months ago 14 Responses

  • my CSA is at the Farmers Market too

The CSA that I am a part of also has their own booth at the Farmers Market. They get boxes to about 4 different distribution locations on wednesdays (and there are 3 of us splitting a small share!) and then on the weekends we can head to the Farmers Market to pick up anything we want more of, to pay for our CSA with food stamps if neccessary, or just to say hi to the farmers.
It's a great system, maybe you can find one like that?

Also, there are great CSA cookbooks out there, where they are arranged by season and vegetable. I have that AND the one we got from our farm. On Umbra on singles and CSAs posted 2 years, 3 months ago 13 Responses

  • Be Careful with those Praying Mantis!

I work in the great state of Washington, and some of my job includes educating elementary schools about the fast fading prairie ecosystem. One of our projects?? Collecting those praying mantis egg cases and keeping them OUT of the prairie (they usually end up in school science labs for the kids to watch).
The Praying Mantis is an invasive species in our region, and is killing many of the bugs that are neccessary to a healthy praire. Make sure to do research, and keep them out of your region if they shouldn't be there! Invasives can do a lot of damage, especially if you are trying to restore landscapes! • Tibet's Environmental Risks

China has not only mined resources that belong to Tibetans from Tibet; since 1950 over one million Tibetans have been killed by the Chinese invasion.
The Chinese government has deforested most of Eastern Tibet, putting further at risk endangered species such as the Panda and Tibetan Antelope. They have nuclear power plants and testing areas at key spots around Tibet, but that's not something they will tell you on the train. Rivers in Tibet are the headwaters of the water supply to the majority of Asia, about 40% of the worlds population. More than just a tourism concern.

When I was in Lhasa I saw a young Tibetan boy being beaten by the Chinese police. I think it's time to stop hoping that China's government will do right by Tibet.

  • more than ashamed

The government of China has a lot to answer to. They are committing cultural genocide in Tibet! They also feel that the natural resources on the Tibetan plateau are fair game for their growing population. The country of Tibet is losing forests, mountains and countless species because of the behavior of the invading government of China.

Did you know that the Tibetan plateau is the source of rivers which supply water to almost half of the world's population? And that China has covert nuclear testing in Tibet, sometimes next to those rivers? Not to mention the mining and deforestation...
