Lets see there's still strong denial that AGW is even a serious issue. With the accepted insanity of the Repubs, it makes for great theatrics and entertainment. A demonstration is in order
Its time to show that renewable energy can do the job with a demonstration town. Preferably a small rural one that would have wind, solar, biomass, caes, (compressed air energy storage).
Building enough renewable energy production to cover most of the town's energy live. Excess energy production can be stored in the compressed air energy storage.
Below is the Grand Solar Plan from scientific american that they can power the whole country. Believability is needed and lets provide it.
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=a-solar-grand-plan
The goal would be 80% or better renewable energy feed in with natural gas turbine backup.
Next would be then replace a whole coal plant and get smarter and more cost effective at it for every one we do.

nuclear short sightedness
I don't know where you got the figure of 20 years for CSP. It should easily outlast the nuclear plants with absolutely no possible drastic side effects. Mix this with smart grid, wind, biomass, geothermal, vehicle to grid storage, CAES (compressed air energy storage), and simply energy efficiency.

Thats denial for you!
People find information based on their feelings and reject the rest. If people being responsible for Global Warming is too uncomfortable, they find the story that feels better. Facing the truth just isn't going to work. In order to change now they want something for it rather than doing the right thing.

world war 2 comes to mind
I hope these stories illustrate why super projects along the lines of the Manhattan Project or the Apollo moon shot are bad models for improving greenhouse gas-reducing technology. The type of improvements we need are more likely to be discovered during deployment than in some separate mega-process that precedes implementing the huge number of solutions we already know about.
Truthfully I think the author is disconnected from how the apollo and manhattan worked. Research is based in reality.
World war 2 developed the mustang P51 as the war raged on. The first mustangs were limited to a ceiling of 15000 feet due to the limitations of the engine. A few years later a different engine was put in along with other improvements to have the superior fighter planes compared to the Germans and Japanese. We need to deploy now fast and hard. With improvements coming from R&D along the way. On Deployment precedes innovation posted 9 months, 3 weeks ago 2 Responses
So many articles lack long term vision.
Compressed air energy storage. CAES. It would use natural gas more efficiently and be the backup for the intermittency of renewable energy. Extra energy from the alternatives could be stored as compressed in deep caverns in the earth and natural gas is used with jet turbines to produce electricity with 80% efficiency. Using recycled energy of the turbins and the efficiency can go higher. Now combine this with the smart grid and now we can be more efficient, lower costs, and manage the intermittency of alternative energies.
This aritcle is very short term. Its the long term goal that is needed. Following cost willynilly is why we have the funky energy system we have now. Long term thinking is needed with leadership to reach that goal.

Loss of reason
As I talk with people online about global warming, I find that reason isn't needed by deniers to make their point. I had one guy write a private note to me saying its like seeing a bad acid trip. Its a way of power. I don't have to listen to reason and therefore I don't have to change. By being unresonable I can keep my win of some kind.
This is how solid the science is. The case has been made very well and there's nowhere for them to turn to. This is the last stand without admitting defeat. How much longer this goes on, who knows, but I think we are in the last stage of denial to get their way with electric power people. This guy is slightly out of touch
(The affordable [factor]'s a big issue. The issue is, is clean coal more affordable than solar? Solar is pretty expensive too, and it's not clean either. You've got to build the cells -- that uses carbon dioxide. I think we need everything. We need a rainbow of different technologies: conservation, solar, wind, better transmission, clean coal, nuclear, better automobiles.)
I disagree with Dr Mueller's conslusion about solar. Once solar is large enough it can manufacture off its own energy.
(There's a future for car batteries, but that depends on the development of battery technology that is not in the marketplace yet.)
This guy must be living under a rock. Toyota Prius has proven itself with the battery technology.
(if you oppose nuclear power, the U.S. will become much more heavily dependent on fossil fuels,)
How about a little foresight here. Many phd's have come up with plans to run the country with solar and wind.
Interesting that he is a proponent of nuclear. Solar electricity is on same par of cost as nuclear. I find this guy out of touch with the main stream of renewable energy.
