I don't get it.
I don't understand the raging against controlled burns. Forest fires are a part of nature's renewal process. If people are going to build their homes in the danger zone then steps need to be taken to prevent those houses being burned down sending noxious fumes into the environment. If you've ever seen a forest even just a couple of weeks after a fire you know what a rebirth it is for the forest floor. On Because Encouraging Efficiency Is Too Hard posted 2 years, 5 months ago 3 Responses

One possible solution...
While this would not solve problems for those who have to hold down 2-3 jobs in order to survive, I think one possible solution to the local food problem is the promotion of growing your own. I'm very interested in the idea of growing and harvesting foods from nontraditional spaces (apartment balconies - big in Hong Kong, those large median strips that seem like a lot of maintenance to keep mowed, etc.). I grow a lot of my own food myself which has really supplemented our personal food supply leaving room in the budget to buy things like the slighty more expensive local, hormone free, unhomogenized milk and organic breads when I don't have time or energy to bake my own.
But, like so many have already mentioned the real obstacle is our cultural attitudes toward food (bigger, faster, longer lasting). Americans in general seem to feel that food is only for filling that empty space in their gut rather than for pleasure or a time for families to come together and reconnect. And, I have to admit, even with all of the putting up of my own food, this spring has been rough in the food department with all of my kids' after school activities. On Ruminations on food, class, and Carlo Petrini posted 2 years, 5 months ago 17 Responses
Class and.... eco-friendliness?
This list... honestly. Who cares? It's easy to "be green" when you have the cash to do it.On 15 Green Actors posted 2 years, 5 months ago 30 Responses
not sure imports are the answer
How much more energy would we be using if everyone all of the sudden ditched their current not-so-efficient cars for highly efficient cars? How much energy does it take to get a car from Europe to Michigan? How much energy does it take to MAKE that new car (approx. 2340 gallons of gasoline)? What would we do with all of the old cars? Are those efficient European cars so efficient that they could make up for all of the initial energy use in their lifetime? I don't know the answer to that. I'd really like to know.On New energy rules could unleash an economic boom and help quash climate change posted 2 years, 5 months ago 18 Responses
