  • So now he gets them back??

Obviously, this is a person that has poor judgement and cannot be trusted with dangerous things. But now he can get guns again! Hooray!

  • Japanese beetle control

There is also a non-toxic, biological control for Japanese beetles called milky spore disease. It comes in a granulated form that you spread in the spring. The larval form of the beetle, called grubs (which can damage lawns from underneath), dies from the disease and thus does not reproduce. The disease is very species-specific, so it doesn't harm other beneficial insects, and can persist and spread for several years, benefiting your whole neighborhood. It is safe and nontoxic, and is the only way I've ever found to reliably protect my roses and grapevines from being reduced to lace.On Umbra on fighting pests with pests posted 2 years, 6 months ago 12 Responses

  • Many big-box "organics" really not

In the debate over the future of organics, the article got at least one thing totally wrong. Many of the organic brands sold in stores are owned by big multinationals like Aurora Organic (which relabels as store brand for many big grocery chains), Dean Foods (Horizon Dairy), Kellogg's (Morningstar Farms), ConAgra (Smart Dogs) and Kraft/Phillip Morris (Boca Burger). You can see pics of the outdoor feedlots for "organic" dairy that are just as packed as any horrible beef factory farm at http://www.cornucopia.org/index.php/horizon-factory-farm-photo-gallery
    (See especially the Aurora pics).
So many of these products are not up to federal organic standards (which are under constant attack by these companies anyway).
Look for real organic producers that embrace the whole specturm of what attracted many of us to organics in the first place - small family farms with a commitment to stewardship of the earth, not just a slice of the organic profits. Look to Organic Valley Dairy for a good example.

  • Best eco-themed folk music album: ...

It's not completely eco-themed, but I nominate Hot Buttered Rum String Band's new album "Well-Oiled Machine" with the title track being about their veggie-oil-fueled tour bus.

Oh yeah, and Summer Rayne Oakes is totally hot.

  • Collapse?

Once again, I have to say that it is incredible what will get people's panties in a twist. GET A LIFE! Freecycle locally has been doing a great job. Maybe FreeShare is too. Great! Remember that old line, folks: Think Globally, Act Locally.
In this case, that means think about how gift-giving and reuse can be spread as worthy ideas, and don't throw out useful stuff yourself.
All of this blather about people grabbing power and deceit and betrayal is just ridiculous. My local group, of which I am a Mod, is doing just fine. And I daresay they will do just fine whether the national Freecycle.org group "collapses" or not. Deron just provided the idea - we locals are making everything else happen. There probably wouldn't be a FreeShare at all if there wasn't a Freecycle first, and behind that, a Deron Beal. Who can say?
So relax, people, and especially those who have nothing better to do than carp and bash and flame etc. go play some computer solitaire or something.

  • dose of reality

I am a current freecycle owner, and I haven't had a single problem with Deron or the main group. On the contrary, they have been very helpful. They have helped set up state advisors that help out newbie owners, and avoid overlap between groups. All of the drama about other freecycling-type groups and such is just that - drama. Remember folks, Online is Virtual reality. We get along just the same with WMI sponsoring the main group as before - fine. We are helping our local community and environment, and that is all that matters. People can get too worked up about perceived control. Relax. Enjoy that new (slightly used) couch.
