  • Hydrogen is not an answer.

"It takes about 50 kilowatt hours of electricity and about two gallons of water to generate a kilogram of hydrogen."

Yes, but where are you going to get that 50 kilowatt hours of electricity? That's the problem with hydrogen. It's not a source or energy. It doesn't matter how abundant the hydrogen atoms are in the universe or that it powers the sun.

"We are moving into an era powered by cheap, abundant, and environmentally benign energy."

What source of energy are you talking about? Wind? Solar? There's no way those sources are going to be enough to power our current transportation system with hydrogen. We currently use about 390 million gallons of gasoline everyday in the US. It would take about double the current US electricity generation to replace that 390 million gallons of gasoline using your 50 kwh/gal figure. I think hydrogen may be a useful method of storing energy but it is simply not possible that it will ever power all the cars on the road. It won't even come close.

I really do wonder why people like you push hydrogen. It's just a red herring designed to distract people from the real problem. And that is, where does our energy come from when the oil runs out.On A guest essay from Geoffrey Holland posted 2 years, 4 months ago 55 Responses

  • Carbon Cop-Out

"The whole point of offsets is not to make you feel good, and it's not to allow you to continue polluting as much as you want..."

Actually, I thought this was exactly what they're for. It's how they're being used.On Offsets should be the last thing you need to turn to posted 2 years, 4 months ago 31 Responses

  • Hipocrisy

If this story is true and Al Gore does use about 220,000 kwh per year then he is indeed a hipocrite. That's just an enormous amount of electricity. That's over 50 times what I use. In fact, I can't see how he uses that much even if he does work out of his home. He's clearly made no real effort to reduce his energy usage. And carbon offsets are just a cop out. If you actually want to pollute less, then you have to use less energy and that may take some sacrifice. But apparently, that's something that Mr. Gore is unwilling to do.

I believe that climate change is happening and that humans are a major cause. I believe that we must change our ways and stop trashing the planet. But I'm not going to give anyone a free ride, no matter what side of the political spectrum they're on. Why is anyone trying to defend Mr. Gore on this issue? You discredit yourself when you try to defend the indefensible.

Al Gore needs to start living what he preaches. If he's sincere and smart, he'll use this to make changes in his lifestyle. He'll perform an energy audit on his home, make the changes necessary to bring his electricity and natural gas usage down to a reasonable level, and then make the results public. He should also get rid of his extra houses. But I'm not holding my breath. On Same as it ever was posted 2 years, 9 months ago 37 Responses

  • Not wrong...

jabailo, those conversions of Celsius to Fahrenheit don't look right to me. An increase of 2°C is not the same as an increase of 36°F. The correct numbers are 3.6°F and 5.4°F respectively.

And that article doesn't say what you seem to be suggesting, that because temperatures were higher in the past then we are not causing the climate to change today. No one denies that climate changes occurred in the past. But we know that we have pumped a lot of pollutants into the atmosphere in a relatively short period of time. And we're continuing to do so. We should be worried about the affects of what we're doing because a lot of people's health and lives are at risk. We know we're causing problems and it's irresponsible not to try to do something about it. On It muddles the science and policy debates together posted 2 years, 10 months ago 47 Responses

  • Poachers

Hunters have always always condemned poachers, at least the hunters I grew up with. Poachers are seen as cheaters and criminals who show no responsibility towards the land or the animals. It has always bothered me when the media refers to these people as hunters. They are not hunters. The article didn't say how large the fines were, but I think 1 year in prison is too light of a sentence for the ring leader. If he was doing this for financial gain, I think a 5 year sentence would be more appropriate. In addition, a fine and the forfeiture of property used in the crime should guarantee that they don't profit in any way from these activities. On Between hunters and environmentalists, that is posted 2 years, 11 months ago 17 Responses

  • Freezer on top

If you look at the spreadsheet from energy star, almost all the top freezer models are more efficient than the bottom freezer. So, if you're looking to squeeze out every last watt/hour, go for the freezer on top models. On Umbra on fridge-freezer efficiency posted 3 years, 4 months ago 2 Responses
