It is not this article, but the proposed actions by the CRE, which are detailed in this article, that are myopic, irresponsible, and motivated by self-interest.On Polar-bear listing would hurt the poor, says industry posted 1 year, 6 months ago 19 Responses

  • better earth for the good of the people

In the past, the interests of environmentalists have butted heads with the interests of people.  We were focused on single issues, like "is it better to save a red-legged frog habitat or build inexpensive town-housing?" But our view has rapidly changed in the past couple years.

The average citizen is seeing that they no longer want to eat the sub-quality food that comes from industrial farming, or drink the water contaminated by run-off from that same industrial agriculture. Social justice critics are seeing that global warming will result in more land loss and hardtimes for impoverished coastal regions like Indonesia and Central America rather than in the places where one can find the sources of global warming, like China and the US. We are starting to look at the big picture, which is simply that we depend on the earth for everything, and when we don't care for it, humans suffer (the poor feel it first since they can't buy their way out of trouble, and then the middle class, and maybe finally the rich).

Myopic articles of limited scope and limited explanation, such as this one, may be really detrimental to our society's progress in the right direction. Environmental activists and social activists should be on the same team in the effort to care for the earth for the sake of all us people. On Polar-bear listing would hurt the poor, says industry posted 1 year, 6 months ago 19 Responses

  • The next step: Ending monocultures overnight?

    This sounds very promising.

If this succeeds, maybe next we could apply the same financial policies to funding agroecology practices in our food system (farms with higher biodiversity, modeled after local natural landscapes) so they can rightfully outcompete monoculture practices. • Global Warming is a Humanitarian Issue

As others have said before me, I really believe global warming should be viewed as a humanitarian issue rather than an environmental issue, especially in light of this UN report. The press (beyond Grist) should make an effort to make people aware of the injustice against other humans that they unknowingly commit through contributing to global warming. We cannot expect people to care when they think they're only harming the environment, but we can expect them to care if they know they're harming other humans, which is the case of global warming. After a due and sufficient awareness and education campaign, contributing to global warming should then be considered not just an injustice but a crime, both morally and legally wrong. • local is better

I think this is a great idea. It is best and may soon be necessary that we support local crops. Not only does it contribute to forming tighter communities and saving costly/harmful flight milage, but it would result in crop diversification. AKA Idaho would not just grow potatoes and Iowa would grow more than corn. I believe crop diversity is one of the best things farmers can do! My only fear is that if organic means local, people and retailers would not be willing to go to this extent of effort to support organic, and they'd give up on the whole idea putting us back at square one.

This is also one of the most important issues covered by Grist in my oppinion, and it has received very little discussion by Grist writers or feedback by Grist readers. On The Airspeed Velocity of an Uneaten Swallow posted 2 years, 9 months ago 1 Response
