Great
Fantastic! This is a subject of scientific research that I thought was quiet recent. The french are not drilling as deeply but Google are making enormous investments into the area of geothermal energy research and here we have the French drilling to heat Paris apartments. Plus it's been in use in the capital for 3O years. Plus they think they are behind in development. Shish!!!!! Talk about raising the bar. Brilliant. I want one plus, what about farts?
I really like this one and would purchase it at the drop of an overripe apple.
What about fart technology? It would be great if we could harvest the energy in farts to run heating systems etc.
Or how about keyboards. Everytime we click a key that generates energy, which is not harvested. Or on cars, why don't they harvest wind energy. There is a massive and reliable slip stream around cars at all speeds and it is not harvested.
Mad ideas aren't they. Apart from the farting one they are all pretty easy to implement. It's time to think outside of the box. On Knee-brace gadget harvests energy from walking posted 1 year, 9 months ago 4 Responses
It starts with the individual
It will only be with the individual. It always has been. Each individual, making themselves aware and doing what that individual can do, makes the biggest impact.
It's not going to reach government level faster than that. They don't believe that people mean it. The car companies and investment companies don't believe us because we aren't acting like we mean it. It's not going to become a part of every moment of every day until that exists. Take it into yourself and live it.
That's the change.
Then find others that are the same. Learn to co-operate and communicate. Become good at bypassing the things that we believe are normal routes of action and communication.
Pay attention now.
That's the difference for today and tomorrow. Start with you.

On It's too late to stop climate change, argues Ross Gelbspan -- so what do we do now? posted 1 year, 11 months ago 45 ResponsesDrinking coffee
Hi Umbra and PCD
Given the largely undefined content of what the average person calls "coffee" it might be best to simply stop drinking the stuff. There are two main types that are sold. The better of the two is Arabica.
I can tell immediately if I am drinking pure Arabica because I feel alert and calm, refreshed and the flavour is the best. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffea_arabica for more info on this tasty brew.
The other form of coffee bean is Robusta and it is cheaper, and not good for me, therefore I hazard to guess, not good for you. It's also one of the main components of packaged coffee. The cheaper it is the more likely to contain Robusta.
If I drink Robusta, I immediately feel it's effects. Hyper active (from one sip), more enthusiastic, aggressive, grumpy etc. A total Shrek, without the kind and gentle humor.
The worst situation was in IKEA where I drank, what I thought was caffeine free coffee. I was delighted to find that I got a buzz from it without any caffeine. After my second cup it became obvious that someone had switched the labels. I had to take to a secluded room for two weeks before I calmed down. My wife was not happy! I'm not exaggerating about the effects.
So better perhaps for you if you take to drinking clear, hot or cold water. Cold of course being the more environmentally sound. The lack of caffeine will probably do you a lot of good. You could take "Paranoid" out of your name. In total, PCD, it would alter your identity completely.

Respect
Respect is indeed due to him. He has gone through a trial by fire and come out stronger. We are lucky to have had him that trial by fire might have and still might be, visited on us and our childrens children.

On Al Gore's commitment to public service in the face of cynicism posted 2 years, 1 month ago 15 ResponsesNot impressive.
I like Clinton but she sounds very weak on the environment. Not at all together. Her last comment "We're currently working with the Rocky Mountain Institute to determine how we can best incorporate solar energy into our home" sounds like political speak for, we phoned up to enquire.
Her focus is obviously not here.
I wonder who her sponsors are? Any oil or energy companies in there? On An interview with Hillary Clinton about her presidential platform on energy and the environment posted 2 years, 3 months ago 32 ResponsesChange of mind time
It's alien to Americans to think in terms of community or socialism but there is a real need for a change of mind and heart in your country. You have socialism in your army and it works great.
Why not bring it out into the country a little and start thinking in terms of 'us' and not them and me. Support community, see your taxs in action and reduce crime, poverty and pollution at the same time. It's not a case of race. It's not a case of environment. It's a case of humanity.

On A perspective from Eric Mann posted 2 years, 4 months ago 29 ResponsesBest article I've read for a long time
My thanks to Tom Philpot for his interesting, no, inspiring and informative article. For me this was like the missing link in all the material that I've been reading on managing my life environmentally. If he ever has time to write a book I'd like to be informed of it. People like him, with practical, living and working experience should be the ones in charge of the USA's agricultural planning. On My address to the Southern Appalachian Youth on Food conference posted 2 years, 8 months ago 4 Responses
