CSA?
Maybe you & a friend or two could go in together & buy a share in a CSA. Then they would bring the veggies to your door, or, if they don't offer that (some don't) you could carpool to pick up. Best wishes to you!

Guess I'm fortunate - my local farm market is just that - LOCAL! I can walk to it. It's right downtown a block behind main street. And they aren't "middle-men", the farmers themselves (and/or their family members) bring the veggies to me!

Not to mention all that plastic trash left over after we finish drinking...
Plastic bottles require massive amounts of fossil fuels to manufacture and transport. Billions of these bottles wind up in landfills every year.
And when bottled water marketing convinces one in five people that the only place to get drinking water is from a bottle, it threatens the political will to adequately fund our public water systems.

Water is available for free in many, many places. Personally, I don't want water to become so "commoditized" that I have to BUY it when I'm out & about & get thirsty. When I'm getting ready to go out & about it isn't hard to grab my reusable water bottle and fill it up to take with me. If I run out & need more, I can re-fill at the drinking fountain in the park or grocery store. I don't know where you go when you're "around & about", but I think you can even find a drinking fountain at the mall! Of course, bottled water companies would prefer we don't have that option...just one more reason I make it a habit to bring my own! Use it or lose it!!!On Author Elizabeth Royte chats about the bottled-water boom and backlash posted 1 year, 4 months ago 7 Responses
my food
Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I think this is the scariest bad news I've seen yet. I really don't think Walmart will suddenly change its ways. It's just trying to increase its customer base. They just don't seem to understand that most people who understand the importance of buying local also know better than to shop at Walmart! On As the ground shifts under their feet, food giants experiment with new strategies posted 1 year, 4 months ago 8 Responses
going green?
"Robinson has been unsuccessful in banning bottled water at the convention center."
Why? It worked at RothburyAnd caterers are balking at at "least three of the following five colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple and white." Easy! Have you been to your local farmer's market lately? I found purple potatoes last week not to mention a rainbow of other color foods!!!On Democratic convention planners struggling to meet big green goals posted 1 year, 4 months ago 2 Responses
Who Cares?
"We need a new source of cheap power NOW..."
It seems to me that this attitude is what got us into the mess we are in to begin with. It seems to me we should care at least as much about reducing our demands for power as we do about trying to sustain what isn't and probably shouldn't be sustainable.
I am doing what I can to learn & implement ways of reducing my personal impact & demands for energy/power. I'd rather start now than wait til it's no longer optional. Kind of like planning ahead for an emergency, but if enough of us were to start preparing, we might actually postpone the "emergency" and in the process, find a better way of life.On BLM reverses stance on solar-project moratorium posted 1 year, 5 months ago 37 Responses
