Excellent article
What worries me is the complete lack of regard for everything except profit. Are these CEO's and senior executives so far removed from reality that they cannot see further than the bottom dollar?
It worries me that the world as we know it could be destroyed by the actions of a small group of rich and powerful people who are outside the democratic process. It's not just the US though, Europe is as bad but with less fossil fuel resources."Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize that we cannot eat money."

I know I shouldn't get emotional or sentimental about one species in particular, but I have shed a few tears over the plight of orangutans. Every year more forest burns in Borneo, killing millions of creatures, not just orangutans. This is the price we in the west seem willing to pay so we can have palm oil in our food. How can we put pressure on the Indonesian Govt to stop this annual massacre? Well, I have sent emails to influential people in the Indonesian Government via this site: http://www.climateark.org/alerts/send.asp?id=indonesia_pe... and the more emails they receive, the more likely the Government will take steps to prevent future burnings. I hope...

I followed the link in the article, never expecting to find that in the US they decimate real, proper mountains just to extract coal. I am very, very shocked to think that anyone could conceive of such an idea, nevermind a nation that could condone such activity. Shame on you America for allowing this and I sincerely hope that the campaign is successful. This is something that should be publicized worldwide as it is possibly the most shocking exploitation of the earth's natural resources I have heard of yet.

I was very saddened by the news of Steve Irwin's death while filming a documentary. I was fortunate enough to meet the man when I visited the Australia Zoo and he was a really nice guy. I hope his enthusiasm and deep love of nature will inspire others to make this planet of ours a better place for ALL its inhabitants. May he rest in peace and my condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

At least California has been making efforts to reduce dependency on oil for years. This is more than can be said for Washington DC, where the politicians have been bought and sold by the oil industry - just look at your president and his administration. So keep on trying, California, maybe one day there will be a successful outcome... but Arnie - show a good example and start the ball rolling by getting rid of your Hummer and banning them from the streets.

While I am all for sustainable living, reducing food miles, supporting local farmers and protecting the environment etc., this sea-change by WalMart seems a bit too good to be true. The cynical part of me thinks they have decided there is a huge profit to be made from 'greening' their brand. Like most multinational companies, profit is their primary concern and I cannot see how WalMart is any different from McDonalds, Exxon or Haliburton in pursuing increased profit for their shareholders/owners/investors using whatever policies they believe the market will buy into.

We are lucky here in the UK in that our media are (relatively) free to report on climate change and it's impact on the environment. It seems to me that the media in the US are following the presidential line and ignoring or rubbishing the biggest challenge to humanity. Maybe there is no profit in it!
Thankfully the BBC (a TV/Radio network funded by UK licence fee payers) is waking up to the problem and has allowed David Attenborough free range to voice his own concerns, using footage from the many excellent documentaries he has made over the last 25-odd years to illustrate how humans are having a catastrophic effect on the environment. Coming from one of the most popular and widely respected natural history broadcasters in the UK, David Attenborough's contribution to raising awareness of the dire environmental situation is invaluable."Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize that we cannot eat money."
