Why bother?
Isn't Lazy locavore a little to time consuming to say? As long as we're being slackers around here, why not just shorten it to lazyvore? Oxford Dictionary word of the year 2008? :)

I wrote a similar piece about PETA's tactics of swapping one "piece of meat" for another. It's really rather sad.

Great news!
I was an early supporter of The Food Network - I totally dug Two Fat Ladies and all the early stuff before Rachel Ray started being the spokesperson for Ritz and Dunkin Donuts.
Needless to say, I've been pretty disappointed in The Food Network's programming choices lately - so hearing about Alton's new sustainability focus is thrilling! I might just have to start watching again.

The Jew & The CarrotOn Food Network star Alton Brown adds a pinch of sustainability to the pot posted 1 year, 5 months ago 27 ResponsesChips, everywhere.
It's so true. I guest taught at my friend's after school program the other day. The kids in the class were well-educated, wealthy, and no stranger to the words "free range" and "organic." Still, their choice of after school snack was atrocious. Cheetos, Coke, candy bars - the junk food works. The scariest part was - I rarely eat any of those foods, but after being around so much of it, I was really tempted.

It's hard - both in practice and emotionally - to disagree with Michael Pollan and Alice Waters, but reading the Times' article, I really did.
I think you make some excellent points here, Tom, about Pollan and Waters' somewhat embarrassing (and a-typical) oversimplification and A+B=C reasoning.
I wrote a similar post for The Jew & The Carrot, which I thought might add further to the conversation:

GE Sugar Beets
This stuff just scares the heck out of me!
One of the contributors at The Jew & The Carrot blog posted a related (and disheartening) article about GE-modified sugar beets. I didn't realize until reading it how much sugar beets are a part of the American diet, and how vulnerable they are to the folks at Monsanto:

I love this list - especially the eco-undies (very cute!) :) On a related note, I compiled a list of organic, fair-trade, kosher-certified chocolates perfect for Valentines Day over at The Jew & The Carrot blog. Check it out here:

Agreed, inkedbuddha - compostable plates are the way to go if you want/need to use disposable. They're not perfect (i.e. a spoon once melted in hot chili), but they'd definitely do the trick with the cheese and crackers or toast Katherine mentions. My organization buys them at what seems like rather reasonable rates at http://www.worldcentric.org
Also - I thought this post from The Jew & The Carrot blog on sustainable food packaging might be of interest:

I want to share Zelig Golden's response on The Jew & The Carrot blog, which looks at the cloning debate from a Jewish perspective. I'd also love to hear responses from other faith traditions on this issue. Seems appropriate, since the scientists seem to want to play God...
