  • Stop Begging To Be Let In

Just go work on the issues.  They want to be exclusive and racist, let them.  Stop whining for the white folks to let you in.  Do your own thing.  The so-called people you call 'polluters' hire and retain plenty of minorities.  These same 'polluters' help black folks take care of their families, while the $6 billion per year segregationist environmental movement has no interest in the economic well-being of minority communities.  Environmental elites and racists avoid black people.  President Bush cares much more about black people than the traditional environmental movement.  So stop your whining.  Get a clue.

  • Nuclear Power Plants Are Insured By Nuke Companies

Nuclear power plants are insured by the nuclear power industry.  There is an upper limit on liability, but there hasn't been a significant accident since Three Mile Island.  Of course, all of America's energy sectors are subsidized.  Just look at the tax code for the benefits that make the American way of life possible.  Most Americans take these subsidies for granted because we simply want the lights to come on when we flip the switch and for there to be gas at the pump when we pull up.

Theoretical energy activists propose unworkable solutions because they do not have to provide electricity to the public.  They see the utilities, particularly nuclear power providers as evil doers determined to kill us.  Ridiculous.  American utilities are providing us with electricity 24/7 in the best way(s) they know how to.  They do not have the luxury of pursuing technologies they know will not provide dependable electricity 24/7.  Armchair critics can insist on unworkable solutions though.  At a certain point, it is a disservice to public policy formulation and needed infrastructure investments.

So Dave.  America runs on cheap energy subsidized by taxpayers in the service of a very high living standard.  A candle and a cave simply will not cut it here.

  • Living In The Past

Caldicott does not have a reasonable plan for providing Americans with adequate electricity in a global warming world.  Her science-as-God approach should know that our electricity demand cannot be met with wind and solar alone.  As an angel of science she should know that base load electricity will be provided in the U.S. by a combination of nuclear and coal (hopefully clean coal).  Of course, she has invested a career in being antinuclear so we should not expect her to side with sound science on this issue.

Her weapons stuff is interesting.  She wants to put the genie back in the bottle.  Good luck with that.  Her sexual rantings about missiles and generals was quite titilating.  Grist might have to get a rating pretty soon if this type of sexuality is splashed about its pages.

Caldicott should come into the 21st Century.  Nuclear power plants can safely provide us with emission free electricity.  The spent fuel can be reprocessed and reused as a renewable fuel.  The warheads she complains about can be converted to MOX fuel and utilized in nuclear power plants to produce smog-free and greenhouse gas-free electricity. On An interview with longtime anti-nuclear activist Helen Caldicott posted 4 years, 7 months ago 18 Responses

  • Jdhlax Lives in Fantasy Land

Wind and solar alone can NEVER provide all of the electricity we need in America.  It is a good supplemental source of power.  Get a clue. Join us in the real world.  Do you live in the woods by candle power?  I bet you do not.  I will bet that you are on the grid.

Your assessment was informative and practical.  This shows the vital importance of developing clean coal technologies.

  • Schizophrenic Green Narcissism

American environmentalists and Americans in general are driven by two forms of green: money and Mother Nature (in that order).  This duality leads to a schizophrenic view when searching the mirror for true meaning. We want a clean environment, but not at the expense of any real individual discomfort.

So McKibben wants society to acknowledge climate change or some other environmental issue the way America recognizes the hit Sunday evening television show, 'Desparate Housewives.'  Ambivalence is the problem Bill.  We clearly recognize ourselves on the show.  When we look in the green mirror, we do not recognize ourselves.  We might talk a big game in public, but the 'Environmental Confessions' comments revealed our true selves.

The big time green groups are the perfect example.  They are K Street, Wall Street, multibilliondollar behemoths, but promote a simplified way of living that would eliminate most of our modern conveniences.  This hypocrisy or schizophrenia is also reflected in Cameron Diaz's new MTV show called 'Trippin' where super successful and rich movie stars  'trip' on the simple lives of so-called Third World countries.  They use jets, helicopters and SUVs to get to these remote locations so that they can 'poop' in the wild and declare the virtues of simple living.  But ask them to give away all of their money and actually live this way and they would bolt.  Why don't the rich just take the direct route to helping the poor by just giving them ALL of their money?  Because Americans value wealth above all other considerations -- including the environment.

So Bill, that is why Earth Day 35 goes virtually unnoticed.  It makes us feel like we should be on the Jerry Springer Show, or at least Doctor Phil.  Now there is a thought for you: How about the Dr. Bill Show?

  • Read The Bill

I wonder how many people actually read the energy bill.  This includes Grist readers too.  The energy sector and our energy needs are so vast and important, an energy bill makes sense.  You let us have blackouts or gas lines and watch how quickly Americans will demand a bill that provides what we demand.

The conservation, efficiency and renewables items in the bill are very important.  It appears that because there are items that semi-deep ecologists disagree with, they believe the whole package should die.

If you have not read the bill, please refrain from making definitive statements about its merits.

  • Leftist?

Yikes.  I have been called many things, but it was really low down for jdhlax to call me a 'leftist.'  Anyone who knows me knows that is absurb.  Then you called me a racist.  How did you get that out of my call for reparations?  Anyway, I would rather be called a racist than a leftist.

Federal land privatization is really a basic part of American history.  Unfortunately, indians didn't believe in land ownership and couldn't defend the land they occupied.  As jdhlax (afraid to use his real name) stated, he is more interested in the hoot own and the oak tree than he is in me.  Typical pagan.  You tree worshipers are the reason The Reapers crucify you.

And it is too bad that you think more of rodents than blacks.
