On Moonbats.
Not so long ago, I called Al Gore a Moonbat. I was reacting to criticism of the shaky science of his film. But considering my own peculiar standpoint - a long belief in human activities despoiling the Earth, not only the spectre of AGW - I had to wonder if it was not I who was the moonbat. By becoming too concerned about the myth of the 'hockeystick' was I not throwing out the baby along with the bathwater.
Were it not for my conviction that Nature is a better indicator of warming than a million climate models, I might still be of that tribe.
But I have been too long in the very camp that hails Gore's vision as something to go for that I cannot do otherwise than applaud his speech.
If the science is dubious, so what - I'm a pragmatist and will ride his wave.
Were he to eventually stand for President and win,

Over in Britain a report was commisioned on GW, the Stern Report, by Chancellor Gordon Browne - much hysteria ensued. What has Browne done about it? put £5 extra tax on an airline seat!
There is, of course, talk of carbon credits. Ordinary folk over there have enough trouble getting their tax credits let alone some looney addition thst they cannot fully comprehend. Extra VAT that can be tracked for accountability would be better - though it is all another layer of bureaucracy.
You would think that with the Thames outside their windows that Brit politicians would be more focused.Yet they can't even focus on Trident and the hypocracy of those in power.
Incidentally the word is that Browne has frozen out Stern who is returning to academe; he will be
concerned with India henceforth - wonder if fears
of famine on that packed subcontinent will focus his mind. There are no gods, no goddesses - only The Mother. The Earth is our Mother... and if you don't behave, she'll clout you!

You are so right, or at least my first instinct is to agree that the arguing gets us nowhere - but I am also disturbed when you say 'solving AGW' because I suddenly see the fault in my own standpoint.
To spend huge efforts in the ludicrous excercise of carbon trading in an effort to cure AGW is to take the eye off the ball. It doesn't require ernest discussion of global temperatures to know
things are warming nor idiotic remarks about summer and winter... it's happening, mate and it is just as likely to be the sun.
Its impossible to get concensus about climate models simply because we don't know enough so it is no good waiting until they agree.
We are still like children gaping at wonders we don't understand.
But we can understand drought threatens people and when villages sink through the permafrost.
What more do we need to start pushing for the so-called lawmakers to get their fingers out. There are no gods, no goddesses - only The Mother. The Earth is our Mother... and if you don't behave, she'll clout you!

I strongly differ from the AGW sceptic in that I believe climate is warming - I have to because thenatural world is reacting to it; it just cannot be ignored.
My attitude may be atypical because I want an end to GHG emissions - it would give us cleaner world and an end to wars fought for oil.I want the polies to take sea rise seriously and stop adventures in Iraq, etc. Trident, forsooth!
The plight of people in drought-ridden parts is going to have to be dealt with and the cause of their misfortune is irrelevant. The battle between
RealClimate and Cimate Audit is absorbing but does nothing for the dispossessed. There are no gods, no goddesses - only The Mother. The Earth is our Mother... and if you don't behave, she'll clout you!

I am confused and I don't think it's my age.
As a newcomer to these pages I have been struck by the anti-denier sentiment and to me it sounds hysterical, quite unlike the attitude of these malcontents. The science based deniers seem pretty calm though I think they are taking rather too much time over that damned hockeystick. All the hysteria seems to be in the AGW camp.
Now 'peak oil' is a focus for hysteria - but surely we should be delighted at the prospect of oil becoming short - it might even focus the minds of those so in love with their gas-guzzlers on alternative means/lifestyles.
Oil is as bad as coal but wars haven't been fought over the latter yet.
The fact that folk like to be frightened has been mentioned - I am a fan of dystopian SF mainly, I believe because one asks oneself the question:"how would I cope?".
We coped for years without electricity though we had to fuel the outboard. Now I am not a primary user of oil at all, but of course we have to eat
from the supermarket shelves - compromise.

It is crazy to attempt to create a tax/trading system based upon something that it is virtually impossible to quantify. The politicians are avid for this because they can use it as a milch cow.
Tax something that can be seen - that digusting Lincoln Navigator and its ilk would be a good start.
Give people grants or tax credits for taking up clean options - solar or wind.
I realise that the huge distances travel involves in your country require vehicles but surely they can be smaller and more efficient.
In Britain there is a lunatic who wants to spend 25bn on a replacement for Trident, the same ass who raves about global warming. Think how much of a clean up 25bn would buy.
Very large amounts of cash are going to be required to assist displaced people - though, of
course, you could buy a lot of bullets to keep them at bay.
Incidentally, some of us find that Lincoln ad
blasphemous.

There you have it - it was love that took us to our island. Love of family and love of Earth, we were dedicated pagans who wanted to DO SOMETHING!
As for a New Philosphy of Unity - that is my particular thing. I've been working on it for at least twenty-five years.

I've just read the Guardian piece and I think the
subsequent rant about fear is irrelevant - in fact it is rather like the whole AGW debate, hysterical! Somebody mentioned panic, well hysteria is engendered by panic. Although he has been something of a hero of mine, I believe Lovelock has lost it. I am not knocking his age - I'm seventy so you can call us both gaga if it helps.
Tell me, why should the ocean suddenly render up its heat? Just a thought.
Now before you all groan and say 'denier' let me say that I've been concerned about the climate since the first OPEC spasm jerked me out of my besotted love of the internal combustion engine. I was a motorcyclist at the time and felt suddenly
constrained, didn't like it but at least I started
thinking. Ultimately this led to my family and I
living for twelve years on an island without any
electricity or piped water. I merely state this to indicate my seriousness. To learn more you would have to go to http://cennad.com.
We hear of 'tipping points' - but the true tipping
point is to be found in the mass mind suddenly influenced by the politicians and their henchmen,or one in particular - Stern. Now everybody is an expert with tunnel vision opinions.
Okay, the Earth is warming - as part of a cycle.
Whether AGW is involved or not is moot - I am
personally delighted to side with the AGW lobby if it results in fewer and smaller personal vehicles and cleaner air. Bring on the electric car! Stop crackpot mass migrations of sightseers
crisscrossing the globe potentially spreading disease faster than the birds. (more hysteria).
Stop the use of oil and make our lands more secure.
Enough - I can rant with the best. But just consider, fear is a survival characteristic - fear of the wrong diet can save your heart.
