  • I've been thinking about this for a long time. Anybody know of anybody doing anything with this idea?On Ask Umbra on buying carbon offsets posted 1 month, 3 weeks ago 11 Responses
  • That is the exact issue that we have as well. I haven't measured it, but it doesn't seem to me that I end up using anymore water than when I was waiting for the hot water to get from our former hot water tank.On Ask Umbra on replacing hot-water heaters posted 1 month, 3 weeks ago 21 Responses
  • Thanks! You are talking about some stuff I've never heard, which doesn't happen often on this topic. On Lester Brown speaks sense on the food/climate crisis posted 2 months ago 12 Responses
  • Any examples of potential storage technologies? I've never heard of batteries that can store that much energy. Is it feasible to store that much hydrogen or air?On Lester Brown speaks sense on the food/climate crisis posted 2 months ago 12 Responses
  • Is somebody at Grist interested in pointing out how we can have a renewable energy electricity grid? I'm still curious how we will have power when we need it at night and the wind isn't blowing in the middle of Iowa?On Lester Brown speaks sense on the food/climate crisis posted 2 months ago 12 Responses
  • relax

This has nothing to do with sustainability, but I was watching your video and happened to have relax playing in the background.  What a great soundtrack to the video.  You should definitely try it.  On An Umbra Fisk video on recycling dilemmas posted 1 year ago 3 Responses

  • Iowa

I bike through the whole winter in Iowa.  On ice and every other condition.  I take it slow in the beginning of the season to get used to it, but by the end I am speeding over all conditions.  What I find the worst is riding down a fresh snow that has had only a few cars on it.  They pack the snow some what and then it breaks out from under you.  Not really dangerous just annoying, and difficult.  I just wear my normal clothes with one more layer.  I live in the country so the wind gets whipping out there riding home in the dark.  Many times I don't have to worry about getting hot.  On Umbra on winter biking posted 1 year ago 18 Responses

  • bird flu

Hey I would like it is Grist would report on the recommendations that for risk of spreading bird flu we should only use confined fowl.  Any thoughts?  On Smaller breasts are better, and other advice for holiday-bird quandaries posted 1 year ago 28 Responses

  • veggies at the fair

I am a fairly faithly attender of the Iowa State Fair.  My mom got 5th in the pro-am horseshoe contest this year!

But back to food, I REALLY like corn dogs, but am also a veggie, so I took lots of time to seek out the veggie corn dog stand.  It is almost always in nearly the same spot.  I did search out the salad on a stick this year.  What a waste of money.  It is ridiculous, you might as well buy a tomato and a head of lettuce.  Not nearly as sensically delicious as fried oreos.  MMMMMM.  On What I saw at the Iowa State Fair, the nation's most popular annual food event posted 1 year, 2 months ago 7 Responses

  • Gorge on garlic mustard

Please gorge yourself on garlic mustard.  Rip it ALL out.  You can eat it while you are picking it.  But do keep in mind that you do not pick it when it is seeding and then string the seeds all the way back to your cooking area.  On Got weeds? You may want to check out purple bananas.  I don't know if they are a subspecies of Cavendish or anything like that, but they are interesting.  On Umbra on organic bananas posted 1 year, 9 months ago 22 Responses

Do you really HAVE to paint wood?  Isn't it just as well off if you don't paint it?  Can someone speak to this without bias?  On Umbra on house siding posted 1 year, 9 months ago 9 Responses

  • Ripon Students

I heard Ripon swimmers discussing this exact thing this past weekend.  They were really upset.  But also misinformed.  I think Ripon has recieved a grant to help put this into practice.  They were angry that their tuition would be going to buy bikes for first years.  But here is my question.  Won't everyone be really confused as to who owns which bike, lock and helmet?  Won't there be A BUNCH of these things looking exactly the same?  On Wisconsin college gives away bikes to students who pledge not to drive posted 1 year, 9 months ago 6 Responses

  • Grinnell College

We are a progressive school, but we can always use more people looking to make a difference.  I am the Assistant Swimming coach and came to work here because of the school's ideals.  But similar to what everyone else has suggested, you could be the one to revolutionize whatever school you go to.  I kind of feel like I had a big impact on my Alma mater, Luther College.  On Umbra on choosing a college posted 1 year, 10 months ago 21 Responses
