C-Word missing from Al Gore's speech
Easy for Gore to make that speech, especially when he avoids the biggest challenge of all: a call for all Americans to conserve more.

One of the solutions may come in the form of Americans' shrinking buying power, as evidenced by recent article in San Francisco Chronicle. I just wrote a post about this today:

On You can't achieve the three goals of climate policy at once posted 1 year, 7 months ago 17 ResponsesNot sexy, but critical
Wow! Your article gets to the heart of a huge issue. While not a sexy subject, the problem of old, energy inefficient, lower income housing deserves great attention, and solutions.
First, because it will lead to substantial reductions in energy use, and hence GHG emissions. Second, because there is the opportunity outlined by Van Jones in his Green Collars Workforce Project, of giving jobs to many of the same people living in those lower income housing. This is a win-win proposition. I know Barack Obama briefly alluded to it in one of his speeches.
Thanks for your thorough review of the problem.

On How smart climate policy can cut our energy costs posted 1 year, 9 months ago 4 ResponsesWhat does have scientists have to say?
I have been following this three-part series of exchanges between Vinod Khosla and his (mostly) critical commenters. Not being an environmental scientist, I will not dare assess Mr. Khosla's initiatives. I do however, have a question for him and his detractors. What does environmental science have to say, regarding the validity of his enterprises? My takeaway from the discussions, is that Mr. Khosla has not done his homework, and is funding ventures that may, in the long run, create more problems than solutions. Is that true?

On The most critical assumption on cellulosic biofuels: yields posted 1 year, 10 months ago 14 ResponsesThe Prince appeared on Dot Earth also
Andy Revkin over at Dot Earth also wrote about the Prince, and initiated a very lively discussion. Some people got bothered that the server to facilitate the whole hologram presentation had to be flown. Still, it turns out the hologram was a good deal for the environment, since none of the Prince's entourage had to be flown for the affair.

A great example of much needed infrastructure
For sure makes me proud to be French!
I agree this is a very big deal and a great example of the kind of infrastructure changes needed to help people become actors in the climate fight.
Mr. Bush, will you take note. Or have we all given up on you, and waiting for your replacement to take charge?

Getting a straight answer from candidates is important to me. Unfortunately, I am not representative of the majority of America. As we know, environmental matters are not a deciding factor in these elections. I wrote a post about this a few months ago.

I agree, sacrifice is the wrong word to use. It implies far greater inconveniences than may be really called for. Kyle Schuant, from Green With a Gun just wrote a guest post in my blog not too long ago, on that very issue.
If one takes the time, like Kyle did, to look at the facts, what you will see is that a tremendous amount of carbon can be saved, without hardly any changes in one's lifestyle.
Rather than sacrifice, how about minor life changes?

I have already left a comment on Andrew's blog. I will repeat it here.
While I agree with all of your comments, I think it is also important to appreciate the richness of the discussion that has come out of Andrew's post. More and more I see blogging, not so much as a way to express my views, but rather as a vehicle for discussions amongst other readers. The more the article stimulates discussion, which this one certainly has, the better.
