  • Popping corn

I have two heirloom corn-poppers:  one for fireplace popping, the other for stove-top use. In each I follow a 3-to-1 ratio of kernels to oil, always heating the oil to a temperature that pops a few test kernels.

The further secret is to use a good dose of salt AND a great sprinkling of nutritional yeast.

  • flex-fuel

What really gets ME is that the car companies get credit for making them even though ethanol is a LOSER when flex-fuels are concerned! On Vast majority of feds' flex-fuel cars still run on straight gasoline posted 12 months ago 2 Responses

  • Sonar

This is a huge setback for environmental protection.Given the accounts of whales that went to the beach and of others in grave danger because of the US'S  manio to test audio systems, it would seem obvious that USH could change the sites of its testing so that the lives of whales weren't endangerd as they are.On Navy can use sonar despite risk of whale harm, says Supreme Court posted 1 year ago 16 Responses

  • Sonar

I'm with Mellotron! No human would survive such an assault. What makes the Navy think they must conduct their training in the vicinity of whale trajectories, especially after they have admitted that their projected sound levels (and praise to the reporters who commented on sound amplitudes instead of logarithmic measures)? On Navy can use sonar despite risk of whale harm, says Supreme Court posted 1 year ago 16 Responses

  • Vital issue ignored..

    Stripped of the flowery elocution:
We humans, those of us who are, are
in fact responsible for the changes
we observe in the global climate.

We need to get, as a '60's formulation
    had it, "on the stick".

  • accuracy in reporting

Your item on 'perchlorate' in drinking water was woefully incomplete wrt what you were talking about:  turns out the culprit is 'potassium perchlorate'On EPA not likely to set standard for perchlorate in drinking water posted 1 year, 2 months ago 2 Responses

  • Land use

If the issue is REALLY haying on protected lands, I'm all for it. My ancestral property is currently in a land-use program and probably one of the last habitats for the red fox in Virginia.

The sight of one of those foxes in the underbrush is a treasure to behold! On Conservation land in flood zone opened to grazing posted 1 year, 4 months ago 11 Responses

  • Badlands

How many fossil fragments remain after the use of the Southern Badlands as bombing range?

I think the new management plan should emphasize minimum damage to the ecological value of the area; if the Oglala Sioux can manage it to preserve the prairie and remanent fossil beds, then gopher it!On NPS considers returning half of Badlands National Park to Oglala Sioux posted 1 year, 5 months ago 16 Responses

  • Loaded firearms in National Parks

Why is this even an issue? Should people who frequent National Parks expect to be accosted by violent wildlife, including humans?

  • Urban exploration for oil/gas

I remember teaching at Texas A&M in the early '80's and seeing drilling rigs between campus buildings:  the focus was on production, not research. On High oil prices revive urban oil drilling posted 1 year, 8 months ago 7 Responses

  • Third world and global warming

There have been a number of reforestration programs going on in India since the early 1990's. It is incumbent on us to recognize the work of Jagat Singh Mehta and his father (whose name escapes me), for their efforts to reduce the stresses of global warming while improving the environmental performance of semi-arid regions. On A Jolly Good Rockefeller posted 2 years, 3 months ago 1 Response

  • Food for the Beef

I remember 1) the first time my family raised a male calf for food. We spoke of "Joe burgers"; little did we know! (Most of that steer ended up as burgers); 2) the year my father planted "Sudan grass" in the pasture and let it grow to cow-height before he let them (two-plus maybe a calf) into it--they would eat down the field, which re-grew to the same height before their grazing returned.

My other memory of that period involves the clapper rail: I had ridden on the manure-spreader several times when I heard its characteristic "clack-clack-clack" coming from the marsh grass when I knew we weren't spreading manure. It was the very secretive clapper rail! Eventually I actually saw one.

Perhaps if they could just drill a few more miles deeper, they could tap into H__l-fire and bring up some serious energy!
