  • Thanks for this - I think it's got important implications for the similar situation in Australia. We've got a weak emissions trading scheme being set up, and there's much debate over whether or not it's worth holding out for something better or just working on the one we can get passed easily now.

  • Barry Brook has a blog

Brave New Climate is Barry Brook's blog - he's posted an open letter to the Australian PM about how climate change has contributed to these bushfires.

  • re: Phone as book reader

I agree with vatavian - I've been using an e-reader application (Stanza) on my phone and really enjoy it. By having it on my phone I don't have to buy or carry around an extra device. And Stanza will accept multiple file formats without any fuss.On Umbra on e-books posted 11 months, 3 weeks ago 9 Responses

  • Aussies can get two more

We get G Magazine and Green Pages. I prefer G, as it's got fewer ads, but both are pretty good. On A quick read on green lifestyle magazines posted 1 year, 5 months ago 13 Responses

  • Have just visited Melbourne

I spent a week in Melbourne recently and was really impressed with the number of cyclists and how good the trams were. There was a lot of life in the city - people everywhere at all hours, big shops, little shops, bars and restaurants all over the place.

  • Interesting video...

...thanks for posting it. But it'd be nice to get a hint on how long the video lasts - the embedded version doesn't show the total length.

  • An analogy is...

...just a way of looking at a problem from a different angle - it's not meant to be a complete analysis of either obesity or climate change.

Talking about the marginalisation of overweight people or anorexia is missing the point of the post, which was to look at general reactions people have to an old problem with input/outputs to a system, to see if we can learn something about how people are reacting to a new problem about inputs/outputs. Do we take the simple yet difficult solution, look for technological fixes, or shrug our shoulders and give up?

  • I'm not a biologist, but...

... wouldn't the panels on the water block the sunlight from whatever plants and animals live in th water? I'm thinking the pond/river/lake ecosystem would suffer a bit from these.

  • Some food only available part of the year

When not in season, we have to buy from God-knows-where.

Or why not try eating the foods that are in season, instead of transporting out-of-season foods from god-knows-where?

  • Memorable, and correct

I agree with RoySV. It's easy to dismiss angry people - but have you thought that maybe they're justifiably angry? I can excuse his lack of manners, because I too will be trying to clean up the mess left for me by previous generations.

If your kid left a messy room for you to clean up, you'd be annoyed. Imagine how your kids will feel when they realise you've left them an entire messy planet...

I don't think fear is an effective motivator - but this isn't an ad to motivate people, it's an expression of what a lot of young people are thinking. I doubt it will make anyone buy a different lightbulb, but it might just make people realise the gravity of the situation. If it's followed up with some ads about what political action can be taken, it'd be part of an effective campaign.

  • Lyndon LaRouche

Here in Australia the LaRouche groups are claiming that environmentalism is synonymous with eugenics and Hitler. They frequently write letters to newspapers and infest internet discussions making these claims.

Some of them were in the audience of a tv-debate over the screening of The Great Global Warming Swindle, there's a video of it on YouTube (about 1min 30secs in, then 5min 10secs and 6min 20secs). They manage to drag Kepler and Prince Phillip into the discussion as well...

However, when I look LaRouche up, it's hard to find his environmental stance in among his other... theories. So it may not be a major platform of his, although he's been around for ages.On Where did the comparison start? posted 2 years, 4 months ago 3 Responses

  • Bush influencing Howard

I dunno, picoallen - Howard has been copying Bush's homework for a long time. For many years he was mocked for sucking up to Bush, and not the other way around. Back in the late 90s everyone used to joke about whether Bush even knew Howard's name. I doubt that Bush is now taking lessons from Howard.

But it doesn't matter: either way, it means that Australia and the US are the only developed nations holding out on global action, and it's shameful. We burden the rest of the world with our pollution then complain when they expect us to clean it up.

  • We need to look elsewhere for leadership

Australia is used to droughts, but if climate change shifts our rainfall patterns further south (and it already has started), then our water shortage will certainly become a water crisis. We run on 80% coal-fired power, and the only option our PM wants to consider as an alternative is nuclear, which uses even more water than coal-powered plants.

Unfortunately, our Prime Minister seems content to copy US policy on climate change, echoing the same arguments against doing anything. The US and Australia both need to look at the rest of the world instead of each other if they want to avoid the worst of climate change. On Are Americans smart enough to learn from Australia's crisis? posted 2 years, 6 months ago 9 Responses
