  • a second part...

there should be a second part to that paragraph...the part about the gov to not pay for green energy in subsidies but tax the black energy how they should be taxed. and that tax $$$ goes (in part) to research. green energy doesnt need a handout that makes them dependent, green energy needs a level playing field based on complete accounting.

  • water???

a major issue with bio-energy is water.
UI U-C researcher did the calc.'s. if every farm that presently grows corn and/or soy in the state of Ill. would switch to Miscanthus, 1/2 of the surface water flow would be eliminated. making a fuel out of alcohol is a very hard on local water issues.

  • hype = scams

the sad truth is that hype sometimes = scams. eventho there are countless numbers of people out there truly trying to solve our energy/environmental crisis, it seems there are also countless numbers of people out there truly riding the wave of hype to profit on a confused and unknowning.

i suppose that is capitalism at its finest.

  • my 2cents

1 Carbon trading will become a buzzword.

2 Alt energy stocks become even hotter.

3 Global warming turns into a major political issue and Al will have to enter the race. maybe as not THE guy but he will throw his ever growing political power to sway the Dem. candidate. They will need Al to win.

4 Green becomes the new black.

  • yes but...

what's amazing is that this information is being put into a report for the first time by our CIA. DUH?

but the bigger elephant in the room is our energy habit in general, oil is only one part. big deal, we secure 5$ a barrel of fossil oil...then what?

its like being stranded on a lifeless island without food and being worried about securing the gold mine.

  • co2 being added

i would add a comment to this answer.

we are emitting co2 at a rate AND context like no other time in history. unless dinosaurs' were burning coal millions of years ago, i would say that this situation is different from previous CO2 events.

ofc then we need to discuss the where and when fossil fuels come from...and sometimes the argument is that 'but how can that happen cuz the planet is only 5000years old?'...:)

  • at least we are talking about it over the holidays

i too had some interesting conversations this x-mas. even tho they were horriably mis-guided on their facts (i heard it was the ozone. no, its all the jet contrails. no, that is wrong, its the warming of the oceans...). funny how no one thought it was them...

but i guess the bright spot is that they are talking about it. before action comes talk.

as to oversold the science...here is my take.

if there is even a 10% chance that its correct, we should act. heck, cheney has the 1% policy...i think global warming has a heck of alot more data behind it than did Iraqi WMD's.

  • why is it not a bridge technology?

i agree with much of what you have said but not the statement "Backers defend corn ethanol as a bridge technology to cellulose ethanol, but for the moment it is a bridge to nowhere."

i understand how inefficient corn (and cellulosic) ethanol is but because there is the infrastructure already inplace with corn, i can see how it is used as a feedstock for this emerging technology. as you pointed out, there is a vast amount of infrastructure in corn production and distribution and not so much in 'cellulose'. so if u are an investor, part of the formula for investing is stability in the market place. and corn is about as stable a crop as there is.

in my opinion, instead of beating up on ethanol, we should be beating up on black energy and the subsidies they get. if you can jack up the cost of black energy, then green energy starts smelling sweeter. and because corn ethanol is directly correlated to black energy, it will get shaken out of the mix of the marketplace and other 'greener' energy production techniques will take its place. the reason things are starting to move is because the cost of energy is starting to move. keep pushing that movement and u will necessarily create new technologies to exploit that higher cost.

here is one of the stat that one must always remember when talking about biomass to energy;   there is 13mBTU's in an ave ton of biomass and a barrel of oil = 5.8milBTU and thus, 2.2barrels of oil worth of energy in each ton of biomass. at $40/ton for biomass = barrel of oil for $18. we need to keep our eye on the prize...
