I feel it necessary to mention GGP is owned by Tom Friedman's wife and family. I mention this because he has a column at the NYT. He can help or hinder her stock with that column. On Mall-operating behemoth General Growth Properties plunges in value posted 8 months, 3 weeks ago 5 Responses
General Growth
Tim Friedman's wife is a major share holder in General Growth Properties. Her future wealth is predicated on more and more consumption.
I say future because her stock has tanked it is worth pennies on the dollar. She was last fall a multi billionaire. Now her stock is worth less than a hundred million if the company survives. On A one-time cheerleader for hyper-consumerism lays down his pom-pom posted 8 months, 3 weeks ago 16 Responses
End the Reagan/Bush myth's
Things like this happen because of the Reagan/Bush myth that markets will take care of themselves. PCA even after it killed several people continued to send it's deadly products to people. Corporations will do as little as possible to ensure food safety. If some people die they do not care.
There is no reason the companies can not pay the government to perform inspections. I know they will scream bloody murder about taxes. Another Reagan/Bush myth. Taxes are how we fund things like fire departments, roads, and all manner of things. On Who put the food companies in charge of food safety? We did. posted 8 months, 3 weeks ago 6 Responses

Talking Points
The car industry is already complaining about too many regulations. They will say it is many different state laws and regulations. How can we possibly build cars for each state. There is a CA standard and a federal standard. CA and 13 other states want a emission waver. The states currently involved in the lawsuit are CA(11.95%), NY(6.31%), PA(4.06%), NJ(2.84%), WA(2.52%), AZ(2.07%), MA(2.11%), MD(1.84%), OR(1.23%), CT(1.15%), NM(0.64%), ME(0.43%), RI(0.35%), VT(0.20%). They make up 37.7% of US population.
Also, there are several other states thinking about joining. The car companies should just bite the bullet and make cars to the CA standard. It will be cheaper then making two cars and suing the federal government to not make the lower emission cars. No one is asking for cars with higher emissions.

(who still hasn't explained exactly why wind turbines and solar panels can't be constructed elsewhere).
Yes the panel and turbines can be built elsewhere, however they are not at present. It cost a lot to move turbines because they are bulky. So most will be made in or near the planes states. Also, once the wind farm or solar farm is built, it will not be outsourced. Wind and solar farms also employ more people than a coal plant. Gandhi said something like first they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win. The conservatives are fighting hard to keep their share of the energy pie. But coal, natural gas and nuclear are going to loose. They are not laughing at us any more. They are fighting!

How to break the gridlock
If only Jeff Immelt had some platform like a news net work. He could then certainly change public opinion enough to make the republicans change their mind.
Wait, I have it they could buy a network to spread the news. Or better yet they could use the two cable networks they already own(CNBC,MSNBC) to push for more renewable energy tax credits. Plus they own NBC.
What is the purpose of owning the media if you are not going to work for your bottom line?On Immelt: yay RPS! posted 1 year, 2 months ago 3 Responses

Wow
Some really great commentary here. I was going to say something snarky but will refrain.
Lin Yu Tang said, "Patriotism is the memory of foods eaten in childhood." We are a nation raised on the belief that cheap meat is a right. Even if cheap meat is a relatively new phenomenon.(last 30 years)
Beef and dairy should be fed grass. That would go a long way in helping the food supply and environment.
It is good to see a thread like this not turn petty and personal. Happy Eating!
