Looks like Obama Caves
Obama reverses his position on offshore drilling and says he is willing to compromise with Republicans to allow off-shore drilling:
"Obama said Friday that he would be willing to compromise on his position against offshore oil drilling if it were part of a more overarching strategy to lower energy costs."
Hmm, yet both candidates seem to be ignoring conservation and reducing consumption as the BEST and cheapest ways to combat climate change and get on track on energy.

Carbon Tax on Air Travel
What if we placed some sort of carbon tax on air travel?
- It may dissuade people from traveling by air and perhaps give trains a competitive advantage when it comes cross country trips.
- A carbon tax on air travel wont effect the poor and working class as they much as they won't be flying by air anyhows as its financially prohibited for most (many can't afford to leave work and/or the price of travel)

More choices, more voices
Thanks for the interviewing a presidential candidate outside the two major parties. I would love to see Grist do the same with the Green Party, Libertarian Party, and Constitution Party when they choose their candidates. On An interview with Ralph Nader about his presidential platform on energy and the environment posted 1 year, 8 months ago 9 Responses
let the man run if he wants
Nader has the democratic right to run if he wants to.
At least Nader doesn't accept corporate money unlike the Mr. Obama:

Whatever achievements he may have had decades ago, in recent political history he has clearly demonstrated that he is a dunderheaded, narcissistic fuckwit. If you turn from an effective campaigner into a destructive egomaniac, you don't get a get out of jail free card because of your past.
Ad hominem statement anyone?
In regards to Florda 2000, Nader was popular with many paleo-conservatives because he railed against the abuse of govenrment power as well as corporate power (many paelo-cons also did not like NAFTA)
Also not talked about is that Nader galvanized many of those who have never voted before or those who would have stayed home on election day if Nader wasn't in the race.
I also think it unfair that when people accuse Ralph Nader of "stealing" votes (because we all know that political parties are entitled to a person's vote rolls eyes), they neglect to point out that every single third party in that was on the ballot in Florida could have tipped it to Gore.
Final Count
537 vote difference between Gore and BushRepublican - 2,912,790
Democratic - 2,912,253
Green - 97,488
Natural Law - 2,281
Reform - 17,484
Libertarian - 16,415
Workers World - 1,804
Constitution -1,371
Socialist - 622
Socialist Workers - 562
Write-in 40Al From, former Leader of the Democratic Leadership Committee, said in Blueprint Magazine (1/24/01) that according to their own exit polls, Bush would have won by one percentage point in Nader hadn't run.
America badly needs electoral reform like Instant Runoff Voting and Proportional Representation.

"The Democratic candidate knows that (s)he owns every vote here.
The same kind of thing is happening on the other side, as the Republican candidate knows that he owns every evangelical vote."
That's the kind of hubris thinking that leads to candidates taking certain parts of the electorate for granted. No candidate or party owns or is entitled to anyone's vote! It's simply ridicuouls to say that the Democrats are entitled to all Black votes or environmentalist votes.
What are Greens, Libertarians, Constitutionists suppose to do? Tell us we can't participate in the democratic process?
I apologize for sorta derailing the thread though.

Time for a third party
This is what I've been telling people. This year is the time to vote Green Party. The only party that does not accept corporate donations. The only party with that recognizes global warming as the greatest threat to mankind. And the only party that has the most comprehensive plan for a sustainable farm-environmental-enery policy. On Obama condemns mining reform package as too hard on the mining industry posted 2 years ago 18 Responses
The little party that could
Sure, and then a Republican wins. Like it or not, the simple fact of the matter is that our political system is built around two parties. It's been a century and a half since a third party has managed to supplant an existing one.
With all due respect, but that's the kinda of self-defeatist talk that global warming skeptics employ: "We can't do anything about global warming, so why bother"
But we can! Think globally, act locally. We can be active and informed citizens by trying to reform the electoral system by implementing Instant Runoff Voting or some form of proportional representation starting at the local level. And Greens have been proven to be capable of running governments as shown by the German Greens and soon the Irish Greens. Plus we have hundreds Greens at the local office level here in the good ole U.S.
I also am troubled with the statement that voting Green will in virtue elect a Republican. First of all, people can vote for who ever they want, Democrats aren't entitled to any person vote just as the Green Party isn't entitled to environmentalists votes. The party has to earn it through the best policies and campaigning (assuming there's a level playing field for all regarding the media and campaign finance.) People shouldn't be pressured to voting their fears, they should vote for their hopes and dreams, as cheesy as that may sound.
Now, I am also in the belief that in order for the Greens to grow, they have to start from the bottom up. That means getting elected at the local level, whether it be for county board or water commissioner.
Now I'm not saying all the Democrats are corrupt and bought off by Big Business, but the progressive wing of the Dems are still chained to the Machine that is the Democratic National Committee and play by their rules. On It makes Senate Dems act like wussies posted 2 years, 5 months ago 23 Responses

I think its time to vote Green in '08. Think about it; The Green Party is the only party that refuses corporate contributions and least likely to be bought or swayed by Big Coal...and Big Ethanol.
